Gareth Jackson was a New Zealand jump jockey who rode in Britain for one season, 1973/74, with just one victory coming from about 40 rides.
That single win came on his first British ride and was perhaps a little fortunate. At Taunton on October 4, 1973, his mount, the five-year-old Kippie Lad, trained by Geoff Francis at Kenton, near Exeter, was vying for the lead with Nigel Wakley on Whispering Smith as they approached the last fence in the Autumn Novices’ Chase. Then the latter’s saddle slipped and Wakley was unseated, leaving Kippie Lad clear to win by four lengths.
Gareth kept the ride for two more starts but was well beaten each time. Despite having plenty of mounts he had no further success, his last effort coming on Alf’s Pleasure, finishing well beaten in the Cartmel Town Novices’ Hurdle at that Cumbrian venue on Whit Monday, May 27, 1974. He presumably returned to New Zealand soon after.
