Associated with Cartmel-based trainer Jimmy Moffatt throughout her career, jump jockey Charlote Jones began riding at the age of six but did not sit on a racehorse until she was twenty. She joined Moffatt’s yard in the Cumbrian village on work experience in 2015.

An equine science graduate from Barrow-In-Furness, she won her first race on Lough Kent in a conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle at Cartmel on 31 May 2017. They followed up over course and distance the following month.

Her best season was 2022-23, when she rode 23 winners, her biggest success coming on Bingoo in a valuable handicap hurdle at Aintree the following campaign.

On 22 July 2024 she achieved the notable feat of riding out her 3lb claim with a double at Cartmel, winning the opening 2m 6f handicap hurdle on Secret Secret and achieving her landmark 75th career winner when Cuzco De Mathan landed the 2m 1½f novice handicap chase.

Charlotte was the leading jockey at Cartmel and rode what proved to be her last winner there on Zumbi in a handicap chase on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. It was the 86th success of her career, all bar one of them trained by Jimmy Moffatt. She announced her retirement, aged 31, after the race.

She told the Racing Post she felt “it was the right time” to give up race-riding and was keen not to become “a has-been” before a possible training career.

“It felt fitting to be at Cartmel,” she said. “I had my first ride, my first winner, my first ride over fences and I rode out my claim there.”
