Amateur James Joicey was in line to eventually become the 3rd Baron Joicey. The Baronetcy began with his grandfather, James, a Northumbria mining magnate and Liberal MP for Chester-le-Street.

But James did not survive to inherit the title.

On May 8th 1929, he was riding his own horse, Fancy Laureate, when brought down at the last fence in the Dover Hunters' Chase at Folkestone.

The other horse was the favourite, Drumbeg, ridden by leading amateur Sandy Scratchley.

James was thrown over the horse's head and suffered a broken neck. He died before they could get him back into the ambulance room.

James's last winning ride had come on the same horse at the Banbury Hunt meeting (under NH rules) in the previous month.

Born on 21 May, 1907, James was a Subaltern in the Hussars at Aldershot at the time of his death.

His devastated father confirmed at the inquest that James was his only son.
