John Jones

1850 - 1892


Born on November 19, 1850, at Cheltenham, John 'Jack' Jones Jones was the jockey who piloted Shifnal to victory in the 1878 Grand National.

He also won the 1878 Grand Sefton and the Grand International Hurdle twice, in 1881 and 1885.

John later trained at Epsom.

His son, Herbert, rode Diamond Jubilee to win the Triple Crown in 1900. A couple of his sons were killed during the war.

John Jones died of dropsy on November 3, 1892 and left a wife and ten children facing bankruptcy. A fund was set up to provide for his family.
