George Jones

1950 - 2015

The son of a railway worker, George Haimer Jones was born on October 28, 1950, and sadly died in early September 2015 from complications after an operation for blood clotting.

He had been on kidney dialysis for the last 20 years.

Two unsuccessful transplant operations had led to the amputation of both of his legs, but he loved his racing and it kept him going through the hard times.

George joined the professional ranks after winning the amateur title. He rode his first winner, April Orchids, at Leicester on March 5,1973.

He enjoyed his biggest win on Java Fox in the 1976 County Handicap Hurdle.

George rode for 13 years until retiring after the 1985-86 season.

He rode a total of 104 winners before turning to training.
