Steve Jarvis

1960 - 2004

Stephen John Jarvis, from Royston, Herts., was born on January 20, 1960, and became apprenticed to his father, Alan Jarvis, who trained at Grange Farm in Withybrook, Coventry.

Aged 14, he crossed to France and spent two years with the Lamorlaye trainer, George Bridgland.

Back in England, he rode his first winner, Foxwood Boy, at Wolverhampton on 5 April 1976.

On July 1, 1977, he won the Happy Valley Handicap at Sandown.

Stephen's best season came in 1978 when he rode 18 winners (including two abroad).

Away from the saddle, Steve was a keen angler.

He rode more than 50 winners but his career ended in 1985 when he was seriously injured when knocked down by a car in Newmarket. He required extensive brain surgery which brought on epilepsy which led to his early death. He died at Fordham in May 2004, aged 44.
