Hubert Jones

Curtis Jones contacted Jockeypedia asking for his jockey-father to be included.

Curtis sent in the following details.

Hubert Stanley Jones was born in Lake View, Oregon, on March 14, 1927.

Aged 15, he was adopted by C.S. Howard so that he could begin exercising yearlings at the San Ysedro, Howard's training ranch.

Hubert broke his duck on his very first ride at Caliente, Tijuana, Mexico. It was in Mexico that he enjoyed a successful, though brief, career, cut short by WW2.

His day in the sun came on June 11, 1944, when setting a world record by riding eight winners on one card at Caliente.

Another great day came when he landed the Presidential Handicap in Mexico City on Gay Dalton, a horse that is still celebrated in Mexico today. He also won the 1944 Haggan Stakes at Hollywood Park on Sea Swallow.

Hugh rode all of Seabiscuit's first crop of foals at the racetrack.

From 1943 to 1946 he rode at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Del Mar, Tanforan, Belmont NY, Jamacia NY and Golden Gate Fields, where he won his last race.

He became too heavy to ride and went on to a successful career as a racing official. For 13 years he was the Clerk of the Scales, eventually working his way up to become the Chief Steward at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar in the 1980s and 1990s.

Hugh Jones died on June 23 1993 in Azusa, Los Angeles, California.
