John Joy

(c1823 - 1907)

John Joy was born in Yorkshire circa 1823. He won the 1842 Northumberland Plate on Heslington.

He continued to ride winners in Britain up to August 1847 when he left to ride in Calcutta. He was successful there, notably on an unbeaten mare named Antagonist. He returned to England in 1851 and was married in May of that year in Richmond.

He rode in Hungary in the 1880s and 1890s before ending his working life as a stud groom near Sheffield.

He was married twice and reputedly quite prosperous. He died at his daughter’s home at Ecclesfield on April 14, 1907, aged 84.
