Taffy Jenkins

Rees Evan Jenkins was born in Wales on July 2, 1927 and became apprenticed to William Smyth.

His first winner was Azrael at Haydock on February 7, 1951: Taffy rode 105 winners in all.

Best among them were Oscar Wilde, Giles Farnaby & Hilarion.

His career came to an end when taking a bad fall at Sandown in 1962. He suffered a fractured skull, jaw, spine plus two leg fractures and semi-paralysis.

He rode a treble at Market Rasen on September 14, 1957.

Taffy suffered more falls than he had winners, these tumbles numbering over 100.

He won the 1961 Gainsborough Chase on Carraroe.

He later turned to training.

Taffy Jenkins died from cancer in Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, on November 17, 1996, aged 69.
