To investigate and research on designing a working drone, thereby, creating a functional product made out of recyclable material found around my house. In this process of creating my product, I will be applying my understanding of scientific principles, which will further help me expand and develop my engineering skills. I will achieve this goal by the end of December 2020.
The IB MYP Process Journal is a useful place to record information while working on all stages of the Personal Project. The student creates the journal in a format that suits his/her needs (scrap book, word doc., blog, composition notebook, binder, etc).
To epitomize, the goal of this personal project was to make a drone, meticulously a quadcopter made out of recycled material to as much of my ability. The inspiration and reason for selecting this ambitious goal is my overwhelming passion for engineering and flight, stemming from my curiosity to conquer and advance space and within-atmospheric vehicles in my future careers. As Bill Gates said, “Drones overall will be more impactful than I think people recognize, in positive ways to help society”.Hence, since drones are such a crucial part of our society, I used critical thinking, communication,and creative thinking skills to make this goal attainable, especially when using recycled materials that I can find around the house. Majority of drones around the world use 90% Magnesium and 10% plastic which gets processed through many stages in factories. This is detrimental for the environment as the manufacturing causes tons of air pollution and eventually, we are bound to run out of such a resourceful element to cater for our future and most likely present generations as well. Even though I was partially unsuccessful in making my first design to fly, I reflected and calculated, exhibiting resilience, of what I can improve and minimized the scale of the drone so that it can fly for 9 minutes with a range of 6 meters. This process to reach my goal was a reflection of the global context; an inquiry into scientific and technical innovations, how humans use their understanding of scientific principles.
