When the gods wish to punish us, they answer our prayers.
- Oscar Wilde, An Ideal Husband
Spirits are the most diverse supernatural race out there. There are spirits of animals, spirits of forests and deserts, spirits of cities and buildings, spirits of wars and battles, spirits of science, spirits of art, and even spirits of people—though those are usually called ghosts.
Mediums are humans who have been touched by the Spirit World and can channel the powers of one or more of these beings. For some mediums, it is a choice, a path to knowledge or power that they sought out. For others, the power of the Spirit World was thrust upon them, bestowed by a spirit often without the full understanding of the medium. Indeed, many mediums were sleepers who were forcefully awoken through bonding with a spirit.
Mediums are, in effect, composite beings, a human and spirit united as one, though each retains their own mind and soul. The medium serves as the spirit’s vessel in the mundane world, chaneling that spirit’s power. In return, the spirit allows the medium to see into the Ether, the domain of ghosts and borderlands between the Spirit World and the mortal realm. For some mediums, this union becomes a beneficial partnership. For others, it is a constant struggle between clashing personalities and goals. Regardless, the bond between medium and spirit is life-long, and marks the medium forever as one who walks between worlds.
As a medium, you will develop the spirt you are bonded with. Start of with the concept of the spirit, and then select three domains from the following list. These domains will determine the manifestations your spirit can empower you with.
• Ancestor: A spirit that is somehow tied into your own history.
• Battle: Spirits of wars and conflict
• City: Spirits who inhabit urban areas
• Community: A spirit of a particular group or organization.
• Darkness: Spirits of fear, dark places and nocturnal creatures.
• Death: Ghosts and other departed spirits
• Flame: Spirits of fire, summer and desert areas
• Frost: Sprits of ice, winter and arctic regions
• Heavens: Spirits associated with holy sites
• Life: Spirits of healing, health and growth
• Lore: Spirits of knowledge and academic ideas
• Machine: Spirits of technology and modern creations
• Metal: Spirits of metal and craftsmanship
• Moon: Spirits of the moon and madness
• Nature: Spirits of wild areas and wild animals
• Stone: Spirits of earth, rock, mountains and burrowing creatures
• Sun: Spirits of light and the sun
• Time: Spirits of historical locations or events
• Waves: Spirits of water, rivers, lakes, oceans and aquatic creatures
• Wind: Spirits of storms, weather and flying creatures
• Woods: Spirits of forests and woodland creatures
For example, if you are bonded with the spirit of a wolf, your spirit might have the domain of nature, moon and woods. A medium bonded to a ghost killed in a violent accident may have access to the powers of battle, death and metal. One who is tied to a holy mountain could have heavens, stone and time. One with a tie to a digital spirit could have lore, machine and community. Be creative, and develop a set of domains that align with the kind of concepts your spirit incarnates.
