The events below recount some major events in the history of the world of Secret Wars.

Note that history tends to be written by not just the victors, but the survivors. Civilizations that were snuffed out due to calamity leave behind few traces of their history beyond artifacts. And European colonialism was a global calamity that snuffed out civilizations across the globe, and left their histories and legends lost to time. If this history appears Eurocentric, it is not because important events weren't happening beyond the borders of Europe and the Mediterranean but because these events have been lost to time, remembered in oral traditions that are not widely studied by modern scholars of the occult. 

Ancient World

~13,000 BC

The Flood occurs, sinking Atlantis and destroying the great human civilizations of that age. Magic is twisted, and many artifacts and spells stop functioning. Time becomes twisted around the Flood, and it becomes impossible to see beyond the receding of the waters.

~10,000 BC

• Approximate beginning of widespread agriculture. 

• Date of inscriptions on stones attributed to the Dropa Tribe, of the Tibetan Highlands. These stones describe how the tribe came to Earth in flying machines; and ancient Dropa graves contain human remains with large heads and underdeveloped bodies.

• Earliest estimated creation date of the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull found at Lubaantun in the Yucatan.

• Hyborian Age of Europe

• Earliest estimated construction date of the Oserion Temple of Abydos.

• Initial settlement of neolitic people in the Jordan River valley

• The Ice Age retreats.

• Neo-Atlantean tribes leave their homelands on the Atlantic Plains of modern-day Georgia and the Carolinas and spread their culture, architecture and knowledge of magic to Europe, North Africa and Central America.

• The first non-Atlantean script of the post-Flood era is developed in Mesopotamia.

• Estimated birth of Baba Yaga to a now forgotten people in the steppes of what would one day become Russia

• Neo-Atlantean cultures rise to heights not seen since the flood. 

• Approximate date of the re-discovery of metallurgy and astronomy.

• Egyptians begin placing small pieces of crystal on the foreheads of the deceased prior to mummification.

• Legendary death and rebirth of Osiris as an undead mummy. In the centuries that follow, many more Egyptians follow in Osiris path, becoming the Osirians, undead scholars, sages and advisors.

• Trephination (cutting a hole in the skull) is practiced by cultures around the world. 

• Approximate date for the end of Neo-Atlantean civilizations in Central America, marked by the destruction of the city of Lubaantun. The Americas and Afro-Eurasia would only have sporadic contact for the next 4,000 years.

• First Egyptian dynasty founded.

• Minoan civilization flourishes in Crete.

• Life of Sargon of Akkad, who would conquer the Fertile Crescent and found the Akkadian Empire

The Compact of Babel is established by mages from Egypt, Thera, Mesopotamia, and the Indus Valley. These mages would establish the first post-flood Laws of Magic, and establish standardized teaching of the occult arts. The alliances formed out of the Compact of Babel would evolve over the millennia into the Orders of Atlantis.

On August 13, in Izapa, the Olmecs establish the start of the Sacred Almanac calendar system, later used by Aztec and Mayan civilizations.

The Pharaoh Akhenaten establishes a monotheistic faith of the god Aten in Egypt.

1344 BC

After having restored the old faith to Egypt, the boy-pharaoh Tutankhamen is buried at Thebes. A curse reading "Death comes on swift wings to he who opens this tomb" is inscribed on the door to his tomb complex.

Rules of Ramesses II, pharaoh of Egypt whose reign saw the Exodus of Jews from Egypt to Israel.

• A massive sacrificial altar is constructed at Mystery Hill near North Salem, New Hampshire by a pre-Algonquian civilization (possibly remnants of the American Neo-Atlanteans?)

• Carthage is sacked; a majority of the Phonecian Akulah vampires in the city are staked or left out in the sunlight to be destroyed. The surviving  Akulah swear vengeance upon the Romans, and in particular the Patrician werewolf bloodlines.

Myrddin Emrys is born in the wilds of Caledonia to a Celtic mother and an incubus father.

Cainite worship among vampires becomes formulated, with a definite hierarchy and priesthood

Cleopatra VII, known Masonic associate and last Pharaoh of Egypt, is born.

The Library of Alexandria is destroyed. One of the library's guardians uses a forbidden scroll from the library's depths, and becomes Abu Rigl Maslukha, the Bogeyman of Fire.

• The Assassination of Julius Caesar and the start of the Invictus War between the Carthaginian vampires and Roman werewolves. 

• Caesar's occult advisor, Myrddin Emrys (now going by a Roman version of his name, Merlin Ambrosius), returns to Britain with his close friend, Aurelius Ambrosius, a skilled commander who would go on to found a noble lineage in Roman Britain, a house that would become known the House of Constantine.

The Mayans adapt the Olmec's Sacred Almanac into the Long-Count Calendar, using advanced astronomical studies.

The vampires win the Invictus War and establish vampiric dominion over the Roman Empire. Lycan patrician families are exiled to Germania.

Jesus of Nazareth is born during the height of the Dark Tide, associated with various occurrences of "high strangeness," including strange lights in the skies, miracles, visits from angels, prophecy, and time paradoxes across the Middle East.

With the support of various werewolf packs, the German chieftan Arminius defeats the Roman legions at the battle of Teutoberg Forest, halting Roman advancement into Germania

The Bogeyman unites the various factions of the Netherworld, establishing the Kingdom Over Shadows.

The execution of Jesus of Nazareth, resulting in more "high strangeness," including an eclipse, an earthquake, and more angelic visitations

Journeying to India to consult with the Nine Immortals, Hermetic scholar and theurge Apollonius of Tyana is directed to the crypt of Hermes Trismegistus. It is said Apollonius met a still-living living Hermes, who was sitting on a throne within his crypt. Apollonius leaves the crypt with the Emerald Tablet, a distillation of Hermetic knowledge, from whence the phrase "As Above, So Below" arises.

• Mt. Vesuvius Erupts and destroy Pompeii

• The Dark Tide begins to recede, and magic fades from the Earth.

• Hero of Alexandria devises a primitive steam engine

Life of Jabir ibn Hayyan (known in Europe as Gerber), renowned alchemist who translated many of Hermes Trismegistus' works into Arabic, and expanded upon them to create the Jabirian Corpus.

The Merovingian dynasty of the Franks is overthrown on the orders of Pope Zachary after a series of heresies, cumulating in claiming descent from Jesus via Mary Magdeline. They are replaced by Pepin the Stout and his Carolingian dynasty, and survivors flee into hiding alongside their supporters.

Caliph al-Mansur of the Abbasid Caliphate founds the House of Wisdom, an extensive library and centre for occult studies, in the heart of his new planned capital, Baghdad.

• The paladin Roland is granted the blessed blade Durandel, which had once belonged to Hector of Troy and Queen Penthesilea of Amazonia. Roland goes on to lose it upon his death at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass, where Roland himself slew over a thousand Saraceans.

Charlemange is declared Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III

• The Veil War, raging for many years across the Earth and its supernal planes, comes to an end with the signing of the Veil Treaty in Baghdad.

• The Veil is sung into existence on the ruins of the Tower of Babel.

• The Order of the Black Cloaks is founded to protect the Veil.

The Age of Man

822 AD

The Sidereal Crown of Faerie changes hands from Mab to Titania as a result of the Winter Court's losses during the Veil War. Summer comes to Faerie after a long, bitter winter.

In the wake of the Veil War, the various disparate magical traditions of Europe, the Middle East, and India--including the Hermetics, alchemists,, sha'ir, druids, artificers, witches, runecarvers, mesmerists, elementalists, jadoo wallah, inyanga, vedmaks and white necromancers--unite to form the Orders of Atlantis to consolidate occult knowledge and advance the common goal of preserving magic in this new era of hidden magic.

The Bogeyman vanishes into the dark of the Netherworld. In his absence, his lieutenants elevate the Parliament of Shadows as the new government of the Kingdom Over Shadows.

• The Mound Builder societies of the Mississippi Valley, centred on Cahokia, start to flourish.

973 AD

Gerbert of Aurillac travells to India and meets with the Nine Unknown. There, he learns many secrets, including mathematics, astronomy and magic lost to Europe for centuries. Gerbert would invent the first mechanical clock of the modern era, and, eventually, use his knowledge of mechanics to construct a Brazen Head, that could mathematically divine the future. He would use this knowledge to advance his career, eventually becoming Pope Sylvester II. 

1000 AD

Lief Erikson becomes the first European to visit the Americas in 4,000 years.

1034 AD

Hasan-i-Sabbah, founder of the Assassins, is born in Qom, Persia.

1052 AD 

The Patriarch of Constantinople founds the Hidden Order of St. Demetrius to hunt down supernatural threats to the Orthodox World.

Remnants of the Veil Treaty's forces make a pact with the Antiquarians at Abydos, and manage to stabilize the Veil before it falls. The headquarters of the Veil is relocated to Cairo.

A group of Tibetan nobles and monks establish the Order of the Green Dragon in Nedong to organize the Tibetan rebellion against the Mongol Empire.

Moses de Leon publishes Zohar, the foundational book of Kabbalah

1312 AD

On charges of heresy and internalism, the Knights Templar were formally dissolved by Papal degree. However, pro-Templar monarchs in Portugal and Scotland provide redoubt for the Templars, allowing many members to survive the Inquisition's purge. 

1325 AD

The Black Death emerges near the Tian Shan mountains of China. The disease would ravage Eurasia and North Africa for the next century. The number of people slain by the Black Death would weaken the Veil and result in a Dark Tide event that sparked a new wave of occultism across Eurasia.

1337 AD 

The White Lotus Society is founded in Anhui, China. Originally a religious movement, the Yuan dynasty's outlawing of the faith turned it into a secret society dedicated to ending Mongol Yuan's rule over China. By 1387, after fifty years of struggle, the White Lotus topple the Yuan, and the leader of the society, Zhu Yuanzhang, became the first Ming emperor.

1378 - 1484 AD

Alleged life of Christian Rosenkreuz, founder of the Order of the Rosy Cross

The Moai of Easter Island are carved.

The Order of the Dragon is founded by King Sigismund of Luxembourg to fight against Ottoman advances in the Balkans

The Order of the Green Dragon is exiled from Tibet due to internal frictions within the Phagmodrupa dynasty.

The Book of Sacred Magic, a tome of Hermetic magic based on the teaching of Abramelin, is collected by Abraham of Worms.

Life of Johann Georg Faust, German alchemist and demonologist

1477 AD

Vlad III Dracula is slain in battle with Ottoman and Bessarabian forces and rises again as a vampire. His death and rebirth also curse all surviving members of the Order of the Dragon, who, over the next decade, all die and rise again as vampires in Dracula's service.

The Spanish Inquisition begins

1487 AD

Dracula formally establishes the Draculesti in Cluj-Napoca, Hungary. 

1491 AD

Disagreements between the Antiquarians and the other members of the Veil Treaty--particularly the Atlantean Orders, the Assassins, and the Parliament of Shadows--leads to the Veil Treaty relocating its primary base of operations to Fez, Morocco.  

1492 AD 

Christopher Columbus sails for North America. His crew reports seeing strange lights at sea in the days leading up to his landing at Guanahani, in an area of the Atlantic Ocean that would come to be known as the Bermuda Triangle.

The Age of Exploration

1493-1541 AD 

Life of Paracelsus, Swiss physician and diviner who is revered as the father of modern Hermeticism. Paracelsus journeyed to the supernal realms multiple times and spent an extensive amount of time in Chaos, where he chronicled the varieties of jinn in A Book on Nymphs, Sylphs, Pygmies, and Salamanders, and on the Other Spirits

1498 AD

• The Alumbrados, a Spanish Hermetic order, is founded to preserve occult knowledge through the Inquisition

• The Order of the Green Dragon is invited to Japan by Hojo Soun to serve as his personal assassins and occult agents.

1503-1566 AD

Life of the prophet Nostradamus

1513 AD

Dracula and his vampires begin the Vampire Crusades, a war of his loyal strigoi against the Cainite akulah who entered into Europe alongside the Ottoman empire. The Vampire Crusades would expand to target other supernaturals inhabiting the Balkans, including werewolves, fey, horrors and mages. 

1517 AD

Martin Luther publishes the 95 Theses, setting the stage for the Christian reformation.

1519 AD

The Aztec civilization reaches its peak

1521 AD

At the height of its power, the Aztec Empire is conquered by Hernan Cortes, through a combination of the might of the Inquisition, gunpowder, disease, and a half-dozen strigoi vampires aligned with the Draculesti.

1531 AD

Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, a convert to Catholicism, is involved with five apparitions of of the Virgin Mary in Mexico City, leading to the recognition of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

1533 AD

Conquistador Francisco Pizarro conquers the Incan capital of Cuzco and executes the last Incan emperor, Athuapla

1542 AD

Pope Paul III reforms the Inquisition into the modern Roman Inquisition 

1543 AD

Copernicus releases his paper, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, positing the Earth orbits around the sun and instigating a siezmic shift in the Earth's noosphere.

1558 AD

Queen Elizabeth I, noted patron of the arts and the occult, ascends to the throne of England.

1561-1626 AD

Life of Frances Bacon, English philosopher, playwright, and occult advisor to Queen Elizabeth I

1577 AD

Ishikawa Goemon joins the Green Dragon, and rises to become one of the organization's most infamous members.

1587 AD 

The English colony at Roanoke Island, Virginia is established; no sign of the colony is found when supply ships returned three years later, beyond the cryptic phrase "Croatan" carved into a palisade. 

1593 AD 

Spanish soldier Gil Perez vanishes from his station in Manila, and reappears seconds later, 9,000 miles away in Mexico City. Initially suspected of desertion, he was able to confirm his identity by relaying the assassination of the Governor of the Philippines months before the event was confirmed by sailors from the Philippines reached New Spain.

1594 AD

Ishikawa Goemon was captured by the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, along with his 5-year-old son, Gobei. While they were being boiled alive, Goemon saw a vision of the Green Dragon, the Spirit of Chaos itself, and made an agreement with it to spare his son's life. Though Goemon died, Gobei would miraculously survive.

1605 AD

The Gunpowder Plot fails in England.

1608 AD

• A 19-year-old Ishikawa Gobei finishes his training and is proclaimed the Avatar of the Green Dragon.

• Samuel de Champlain founds the City of Quebec

1609 AD

Powhatan Chief Opechancanough begins the Anglo-Powhatan Wars under urging from Algonquian werewolves and shamans. The wars would last until 1644 and significantly slow the English settlement of Virginia--as well as the expansion of vampires into North America.

1614 AD

• Fama Fraternitatis, an anonymous Rosicrucian manifesto detailing Hermetic magic and other esoteric subjects, is published in Kassel, Germany

• Countess Elizabeth Bathory completes a blood magic ritual, dying but rising again on the night of the next lunar eclipse, becoming a vampire.

The Pilgrims arrive at Cape Cod

Traders from across Europe and the Mediterranean gather just outside of Liverpool, England, to establish a new society dedicated to preserving Masonic knowledge, open to any who show interest in the arts: the "free" Masons.

Madame La Voisin, French diabolist, is executed for her involvement in the Affaire des Poisons, which resulted in upwards of 2,500 being murdered or sacrificed through poison and black magic.

William III of Orange becomes King of England through the manipulation of several Masonic orders

• The War of 1812 ends with a status quo ante bellum. North America is divided between the human-dominated secret societies of America, and the monsters of British North America--notably vampires, werewolves and horrors. Due to the Veil Treaty's favourable alliance with British Crown, American cities such as New York and Boston are snubbed in favour of Montreal, Canada and Kingston, Jamaica as centres of the Veil's operations in the New World.

The revolt is crushed, the Union of Salvation is hunted down by agents loyal to the Tsar, and many other European secret societies are brutally repressed in the Empire. By the end of the decade, the DoJ had driven the Golden Circle underground, persecuted leaders of the Ku Klux Klan, and significantly weakened the Masons. Believing that his miraculous resurrection would only lead to more extreme attempts on his life, Rasputin convinced the Tsar to hold a fake funeral for him, and the Mad Monk travelled East to meet with his allies in the Green Dragon, in particular the Avatar, Gobei Ishikawa.

For freeing the "good, honest folk," she is granted good health and good harvests from her home's garden for the next seven years. During the Battle of Britain, her home and her garden remain completely untouched, and become a bastion of safety among her neighbours.

• M.M. Wedderburn, British Governor-General of Ceylon, and a collection of other British officials, visit the temple of Kataragama during a pilgrimage, where they encountered a Tamil girl dancing in religious rapture. The officials decided to photograph her, and, at the end of her dance, the woman vanished into thin air. When the men returned to Colombo and had the film developed, there was no evidence of the woman.

• A Methodist preacher encountered a large black dog during his trip between the towns of Hogsthorpe and Willoughby, Lincolnshire, England. The black dog walked with the preacher for the rest of the trip, before vanishing into the shadows. Afterwards, the Preacher said that while the black dog gave him great unease, he nonetheless felt the beast was sent to protect him from even worse terrors that dwelt in the night.

• German expedition to Antarctica stakes out a vast swathe of territory as German territory, called "New Swabia." Officials associated with the Thule Society quickly seized control over New Swabia and began constructing numerous research bases on the Antarctic ice.

• Austria is annexed into Germany; Interpol falls under Nazi control and became an international arm of the Thule Society

• Orson Welles' dramatization of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds causes mass panic in the United States, as the broadcast is misconstrued as reality.

Those who discovered the site were quarantined for several days to watch for possible infection, and they became delirious with fever, ranting about "being tainted with the blood of Ahriman." The fever and delirium subsided over a week, with the victims having no recollection of the past week's activities, nor were they able to find the abandoned dakhma again.

2004

• Motion-sensing cameras in the Mendocino County Courthouse in California capture a ghostly apparition on film

• A vacationer at Okanagan Lake in British Columbia captures images of Ogopopgo, a 45-foot-long lake monster

• A 15-year-old girl in Jharkhand, India is taken to the hospital after she cries stones  instead of tears

• Devin McAnally shoots a strange animal he thought to be a Chupacabra on his ranch outside of San Antonio, Texas. Uncertain what to do with the body, he buried the remains. Two weeks later, after posting about the creature online, he was approached by a group of paranormal investigators, and so went to hand over the remains, only to find the grave he dug empty of everything other than bones that looked decades old. 

• The USS Princeton and the USS Nitmitz encounter a swarm of UFOs off the coast of Ensenada, Baja California during a routine training mission, and capture images of a strange object.

2005

• James Hamburg is photographed running a red light in Mesa, Arizona, five years after he passed away.

• A group of college students partying at a cabin outside of Chicora, Pennsylvania are accosted by a swarm of bat-like faeries.

• The first Horror Shop, a chain of stores specializing in horror- and Halloween-related paraphenalia, is founded in Boston, Massachusett by Samuel Baneson

2007

• While walking his dog, a man in Derbyshire, England stumbled across a small burial mound that contained the ritually mummified bodies of at least two dozen fairies.

• A tree near the the village of Patrame, Karnataka is seen by villagers to reach down, lift up a cow, and began devouring the animal. In a panic, the villagers hacked down the tree and burnt it to ensure the "Tiger Tree" would not attack anyone else.

2008

• A ghost haunting a toilet at a holiday camp in New Zealand becomes the source of numerous close paranormal calls because a ghost haunting a toilet stall at a summer camp is just asking for teenagers to do somethign stupid

2009

• A 100 ft. long, snake-like monster washes up on the beach near Palermo, Italy. Several tourists and beachcombers take photos with the strange creature, before the military and government agents showed up, seized smartphones and cameras, and put the beech on quarentine for months.

• For several months, the Loch Ness Monter is visible on a Google Maps satellite photo before it is scrubbed from the internet and, presumably, someone was fired at the Blackcloaks' redaction department.

• A string of murders are carried out around Brown Mountain, North Carolina. Eventually, the culprit--a local man who wore a pumpkin mask--was caught. He claimed to following the instructions of the "Pumpkin Man," a small creature that floated around the dark woods at night and wished to protect the forest from the "tall ones."
