Creature Types
Creatures of the world can be divided into several broad categories, or types, as well as more specific subtypes. Often, magic will affect a creature of one type and not interact with another at all.
The following is a list of creature types encountered in Secret Wars
Animal
An animal is a living nonhuman creature native to the Mortal Plane with no supernatural abilities or potential for magic.
You can identify Animals through a Life Science check.
Astral
An astral entity is a sapient being native to the Astral Plane or one of the domains within it.
You can identify Astral entities through an Occult Lore check.
There are many types of astral creatures, but the following subtypes are among the most common.
Celestial
Creatures that hail from the Empyrean or have close ties to virtues and the powers of good.
Daemons
Creatures that hail from Cyberspace and represent various functions and operations in the digital world.
Fiends
Creatures that hail from the Abyss or other corrupted Astral domains and who have a close tie to sin and vice.
Construct
A construct is an artificial creature animated by magic or mad science. Constructs include gargoyles, tomb guardians, golems, robots and AIs. Constructs are not living creatures, nor are they undead. Sapient constructs often possess souls, and so can be affected by magics that target other besouled creatures.
You can identify constructs with either an Occult Lore check (for golems, gargoyles and other archaic constructs) or a Technical Science check (for robots and other modern constructs).
Cryptid
A cryptid is a living nonhuman creature native to the Mortal Plane that possesses some degree of supernatural abilities.
There are numerous cryptid subtypes. The most notable subtypes are dragons and giants.
You can identify cryptids with an Occult Lore check.
Fungi
Fungi includes both normal fungi, and supernaturally empowered members of the genus, such as the giant mushrooms found in the swamps of Faerie or the caves of Chaos.
You can identify fungi through a Life Sciences check.
Human
Humans are the dominant species of the Earth. The human species includes both magical and non-magical members.
You can identify characteristics of a particular human through a Social Sciences check.
Outsiders
Outsiders are beings from the Outsider, the space beyond the Earth's multiverse. They are alien to our natural order and taint the world around them with their corruption.
You can sometimes discern certain outsiders through Occult Lore, but it's not guaranteed.
Plant
Plants include vegetable entities, from the regular plants you can find growing in a garden to the strange flora found on the Supernal planes.
You can identify plants through a Life Sciences check.
Shapeshifter
A shapeshifter is a creature that naturally shifts between two or more forms. The most notable shapeshifters are dragons and shifters.
A shapeshifter can have multiple other creature types. A shapeshifter counts as all those types for the purposes of spells or supernatural effects, but they only count as the type of the form they're currently taking when targeted with mundane effects. So a spell that wards against spirits will affect a werewolf in any form, but a poison that only affects canines will not affect a werewolf if they shift into human form.
When you know a creature is a shapeshifter, you can use Occult Lore to identify it.
Supernal
Supernal creatures hail from one of the five Supernal planes. Supernals are more closely tied to the Mortal Plane than Astral entities, making them more vulnerable to magics that affect inhabitants of the material but also harder to banish properly.
You can identify a supernal through an Occult Lore check.
The most prominent forms of supernals include:
Fey
The children of passion and life, the fey embody various stories, myths, and dreams and often seem to be something of a throwback to an earlier age of knightly virtues and great quests of courtly intrigue and mighty heroes.
Genies
The children of creation and change, genies are formed from the primordial elemental building blocks of the universe and have within them some of the spark of creation, allowing them to work wonders.
Horrors
The spawn of the Pit and the incarnations of terror itself, horrors are the cause of many of the strange and unique monstrosities that plague humanity's legends.
Reapers
The ferrymen of death, reapers are beings that protect the divide between the temporal realms and the afterlife.
Spirits
Spirits are metaphysical incarnations of various Mortal realm places and concepts, from rivers and mountains to the moon and the sun to law and invention.
Undead
Undead are once-living creatures animated by supernatural or spiritual forces. As they are no longer alive, they must feed on the anima of the living to survive. As undead are no longer alive, they are resistant to many spells and effects that target the living.
You can identify an Undead through an Occult Lore check.
There are numerous subtypes of undead, but the most notable include ghosts, ghouls, liches, mummies, revenants and vampires.
