Genesis 9:1-29
Noah, a Believer in God, Humble Man Who Would Help the Future of Mankind
1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. 2 The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands. 3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.
4 “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. 5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.
6 “Whoever sheds human blood,
by humans shall their blood be shed;
for in the image of God
has God made mankind.
7 As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”
The Sons of Noah
18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth.
20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.
24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said,
“Cursed be Canaan!
The lowest of slaves
will he be to his brothers.”
26 He also said,
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem!
May Canaan be the slave of Shem.
27 May God extend Japheth’s territory;
may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,
and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.”
28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died.
After Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate from the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil, things got bad on earth...Sin over time became rampant in our world...The first sin started out of disobedience to God...He has told Adam that the Garden of Eden was his to work and take care of this Paradise...And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”...The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone...I will make a helper suitable for him.”...And so Eve was made from the rib of Adam...He now had a helper in the Garden of Eden, their Paradise...
God took notice of the sin on earth and wanted to end the world of sin as the population grew...This began when human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose...Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”...The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them...They were the heroes of old, men of renown...The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time...Evil had became the way on earth...The LORD seeing this regretted that He had made human beings on the earth, and His heart was deeply troubled...So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”...But, good for us, Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD...
So God being Perfectly Moral and sin has and is no part in Him, He decided He could not leave our sins unpunished... Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was now full of violence...God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways...God had watched Noah...Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God...Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth...So God said to Noah, “I AM going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them...I AM surely going to destroy both them and the earth...So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out...This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high...Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around...Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks...I AM going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it...Everything on earth will perish...But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you...You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you...Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive...You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”...Noah did everything just as God commanded him...
The flood came and covered the entire earth...The waters covered all the mountains, as it rained for forty days and forty nights...The rains finally stopped...The flood was over, and all evil had been destroyed...God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth...The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands...Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you...Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything...“But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it...And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting...I will demand an accounting from every animal...And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being...“Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the Image of God has God made mankind...As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”...Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish My Covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth...I establish My Covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”...And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I AM making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth...Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember My Covenant between Me and you and all living creatures of every kind...Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life...Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the Everlasting Covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”...So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”...The covenant is a beautiful rainbow that appeared after the flood, which means the earth will never again be destroyed by flooding...
God was so grieved by our constant sins that He judged the world in Righteousness Way through a worldwide flood...Because of the righteousness and humility of one man named Noah we were spared from this original judgement...And Noah's family would repopulate the earth...Noah, his family, and the ark had saved us and many of the animals on earth...
About seven hundred years before Jesus came to dwell among us, the Prophet Isaiah wrote this about Him: He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities and sins: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His tortuous stripes on His back we are healed...Our Father in heaven saw our need for a Savior for us...By His death we are all saved and our sin debt satisfied: by His knowledge shall My Righteous Servant will justify those who believe in Him; for He shall bear their iniquities and sins...
Because God is LOVING, forgiving, merciful, and kind, He provided a way for all sinners who will humble themselves, confess their sins, to be saved from eternal punishment, through His Son, Jesus...Jesus is a Man (if it is fair to call Him a Man) who never has sinned...But He was judged and crucified for all sinners, and judged by His Father, in our place...Jesus who never sinned and who knew no sin; died on a cross that we might be made the Righteousness of God in Him...And God made Him rise again after His death...
One would have thought the world after the Great Flood, we would have been more free of sin, and less sin...We would have thought disobedience to God would have lessened...But that has not happened...We read and see the news of evil each and everyday...And though God's Covenant of the rainbow still saves us from the world being flooded again, we are still haunted by our sins...Jesus has been appointed Judge for the End of Ages...“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but Only the Father...As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man...For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away...That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man...Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left...Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left...“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your LORD will come...But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into...So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him...
God has given us His Son, A Savior, who is Christ the LORD...Let us look to the Christ the LORD, who is full of LOVE, mercy, and forgives all of who have sinned who come to Him in Truth...We need a Savior...We need Jesus...Let us have faith, keep our faith, and have it on guard for when Jesus comes in His Second Advent...Jesus, our Savior helps us, for He shall bear our inequities and sins, if we believe in Him and the One who sent Him to earth...
