Genesis 11:1-9
The Tower of Babel
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”
8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
The Story of Babel is an interesting story of why God changed a one language world to a many language world with different cultures...God deserves the the Glory of what we do and we should not go off looking for personal reasons just to make a name for ourselves....God is the One would Created us in His Image and teaches us to be humble and serve others...
The Story of Babel emphasizes the people's desire to "make a name for themselves" and reach for the heavens of God...This is seen as an act of human pride, a challenge to God's Authority...Man should have known that God is and can be anywhere, because God is Spirit...He would not necessarily be at the top of a Towe of Babel had it got completed...But because of our arrogance and pride He confused our attempt to reach the highest of skies and changed our languages and scattered men all over the earth...So God would thwarts man's attempt to achieve greatness on our own terms...
The story signifies God's opposition to human arrogance and a desire for unchecked power...Others see it as a symbolic explanation for the diversity of languages and cultures...Regardless of how you read the short text, the story doesn't condemn the idea of a single language itself...The focus is on the motivation behind the project - human pride and a desire to challenge God's Authority...
Now when I look at the internet and the collaboration of men, I think about the Tower of Babel Story...Is the Internet and a "Universal Language" of the web have similarities to the Tower of Babel...Currently the internet is not a Single Language...The internet doesn't create a single, unified language in the same way...It allows communication and information sharing despite language barriers through translation tools and the dominance of certain languages online (like English)...Linguistic diversity can be seen as a strength, reflecting the richness of different human cultures and perspectives...There have been many different cultures coming together and making the world more in harmony...
So are we doing the right thing with collaboration and the internet?...Collaboration and understanding seem like a good thing...Man can work together and connect and create a better world...The internet's ability to connect people across languages and cultures promotes understanding and collaboration and can be used for the good of humankind...This can be seen as a positive development for the world...
But there are challenges that remain...Do all men work to make the world a safer place for all, including the marginal people and for people of all colors?...Language barriers and polarization still create challenges online...Misinformation and cultural misunderstandings can occur and are being spread almost overnight in today's world...Efforts towards better translation tools and fostering intercultural communication are still important...
We need to create an internet where love and empathy exist...More balance and respect for others are needed...The ideal might be a balance between fostering communication and collaboration online while respecting and celebrating people and linguistic diversity...
Perhaps one of the key takeaways from Babel is the importance of focusing on positive intentions in our endeavors, whether online or offline...The story of Babel and the internet are complex issues...While the internet doesn't create a single language, it promotes communication and understanding across cultures...The focus should be on using human collaboration for the good and for respecting diversity...God created diversity, when He took down the Tower of Babel...
I think of what Jesus did and might do in today's high tech world...Jesus interacted and welcomed people on the margins of society, like tax collectors, sinners, and the ostracized people of His society...This challenged the religious and social norms of His time, so there is no reason to think He would not do that today...
Jesus focused on the individual to make them loved, safe, and secure...Everyone He met had a name and meaning for Him...When He sat down with an individual He gave you the attention you deserved, no matter who you were and are...Jesus didn't limit His teachings to a specific social class, culture, or ethnicity...He interacted with Samaritans and the Canaanites (often excluded by Jews), women (who held a lower status), and foreigners of other countries...He even did a miracle for a Roman centurion, and Rome occupied His nation of Israel...
Jesus teaches us the Great Commandment...Jesus summarized the Law and Prophets by emphasizing love for God and love for neighbor...This love extends to everyone, regardless of social status, background, color, language, or culture...
Many of His Parables were about His Kingdom...Many parables, like the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) and the Great Banquet (Luke 14:15-24), illustrate a Kingdom where all and everyone, everywhere are welcome, including those traditionally excluded...Let us live in today's world with Jesus type and like values...Let us pray that one day He will bring us all together...
