Genesis 25:12-18
Ishmael's Sons
12 This is the account of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Sarah’s slave, Hagar the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.
13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers according to their settlements and camps. 17 Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people. 18 His descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. And they lived in hostility toward all the tribes related to them.
Ishmael was born as the son of Abraham, the Patriarch, and Hagar, his maidservant from Egypt...The birth was actually planned by Sarai, Abraham's wife, who could not conceive her husband a child at the time...But God had promised Abraham and Sarai, a son, so they were premature in thinking they would not have children, even though both were up in their years...So Sarai suggested Abraham have a son with their maidservant Hagar...Abraham was around eighty six years old when Ishmael was born...Ishmael had twelve sons...Listed in order of their birth, oldest to youngest: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah...These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers according to their settlements and camps. Ishmael is recognized as an important prophet and the patriarch of Islam and the Muslim religion...Since Ishmael was actually Abraham's firstborn son, they believe that Ishmael is the elder of his sons...Ishmael is recognized by Muslims as the ancestor of many of the Arab tribes and being the forefather of Muhammad...Muslims also believe that Muhammad was the descendant of Ishmael...Muhammad would and did establish a great nation, as promised by God in the Old Testament...The Islam and Muslim religion still exist today...To this day many of the descendants of Ishmael still live in hostility to Israel...
