SUSAN LAWRENCE OLOM

(1916-1995)

Community Activist

Worked for the U.S. government during World War II in both London and Washington and later worked as a writer-editor for the U.S. Public Health Service.

Served eight years as a member of the Falls Church Board of Zoning Appeals, 1965–1973.

Served on the Falls Church Architectural Advisory Board, 1978–1980.

Active member of the Falls Church League of Women Voters, serving as president from 1956 to 1958, and also as a board member of the State of Virginia League of Women Voters.

As the first chair of the Aurora House Citizen’s Advisory Committee, 1989–1993, she planned and oversaw the building of Aurora House, a residential counseling center that provides at-risk girls the nurturing, structure, and support necessary to help them overcome difficulties they experience. In 1995 a college scholarship for Aurora House graduates was created and named the Susan Lawrence Olom College Scholarship in honor of her dedication and support.

Longtime member of the Woman's National Democratic Club and the International Club and a volunteer for the Fairfax Hospital Auxiliary, Falls Church Girl Scouts, and Falls Church PTAs groups.
