Educator & Leader

Taught and served as principal of the “Colored School” in Falls Church for 32 years in a building with no heat, running water, or janitorial services, where teachers and students provided all support services.

Completed a study in 1936 highlighting the disparity between black and white schools and presented her findings to the City Council.

Succeeded in securing a new school for African American students.

Became the first African American woman to join the Falls Church chapter of the League of Women Voters.

Founding member of the Falls Church Women's Democratic Club.

Thirty-year volunteer with the Girl Scouts.

Charter member of the first rural branch of the NAACP.

Namesake of the Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School in the City of Falls Church.
