At Stratford and Warwick

Did I some small part of history

Discover, petrified in memory and stone.

Parchments and monuments

Like rivets pin attention to a past

Long dead whose mighty castles

Long since turned to dust.

There's little to be learned from history

Except that men of ages past

Were no more wise or pure

Or clear of mind than we

But one thing it teaches us for sure,

Is that nought in this solid universe doth last

And the human spirit alone endures.
