In 1991, Christina Karlsen died of smoke inhalation, after being trapped in her bathroom while her house burned. In February of 2020, Christina's husband, Karl Karlsen, was found guilty of intentionally setting the fire and murdering his wife to obtain a life insurance payout.

Levi Karlsen was murdered by his father, Karl Karlsen, in 2008. The motive for this crime, was an insurance payout. Karl Karlsen plead guilty in 2013 to rigging a jack so a truck Levi was working on would fall on him. He was sentenced to 15 years to life in New York State where the crime occurred.
