Armageddon

In Revelation 16.16 we find there is been spoken about Armageddon, the “Hebrew” name for the location where the kings of the earth will assemble to fight against God.

“ And the demonic inspirations led them together into the place that is called in Hebrew HAR- MAGEDDON.” (Re 16:16 mhm)

Scholars generally explain Armageddon (NRSV: “Harmagedon”) as a Greek transliteration of the Hebrew phrase har mēgiddô (“the mountain of Megiddo”). The city of Megiddo, strategically located in the western part of the Esdraelon valley at the crossroads of two trade routes, was the site of several important battles in ancient times.

The reference to the “mountain” of Megiddo is, however, more problematic, corresponding to no evident geographical feature in the area.

Although Armageddon appears only once in the Bible, it has become a familiar designation for the future final battle between the forces of good and evil, and it has been the subject of lots of discussions and films about expected end times.

When that final battle would take place nobody knows for sure. In the bible there is no specific time given. Though the Book of books warns that people should look for signs when times would be coming. In the Scriptures we can find such signals which should alert us and make ourselves to prepare for those Last Days.

Armageddon

In Openbaring 16.16 zien we dat er gesproken is over Armageddon, de "Hebreeuwse" naam voor de locatie waar de koningen van de aarde zullen samenkomen om tegen God te vechten.

“Ze brachten hen bijeen op de plaats die in het Hebreeuws Harmagedon heet.” (Opb 16:16 NBV)

Geleerden verklaren Armageddon (NRSV: "Harmagedon") over het algemeen als een Griekse transcriptie van de Hebreeuwse uitdrukking har mēgiddô ("de berg van Megiddo"). De stad Megiddo, strategisch gelegen in het westelijke deel van de Esdraelon-vallei op het kruispunt van twee handelsroutes, was de locatie van verschillende belangrijke veldslagen in de oudheid.

De verwijzing naar de "berg" van Megiddo is echter problematischer, omdat er geen duidelijk geografisch kenmerk in het gebied is.

Hoewel Armageddon maar één keer in de Bijbel voorkomt, is het een bekende aanduiding geworden voor de toekomstige eindstrijd tussen de krachten van goed en kwaad, en het is het onderwerp geweest van veel discussies en films over verwachte eindtijden.

Wanneer dat laatste gevecht zou plaatsvinden, weet niemand zeker. In de Bijbel staat geen specifieke tijd vermeld. Hoewel het Boek van boeken waarschuwt dat mensen naar tekenen moeten zoeken wanneer er tijden komen. In de Schrift kunnen we zulke signalen vinden die ons zouden moeten waarschuwen en ons moeten voorbereiden op die laatste dagen.
