James Y Chen

For my practices, I have mostly stayed true to using traditional materials such as charcoal, ink, and oil on a flat surface such as illustration boards and canvases. Self-portraits have a unique allure to me, and because of my Asian heritage, most of my art takes root in the Eastern cultural or is influence by it. In all honestly, the realm of contemporary art is a murky place, and for me to stand firm with a more representational and illustrative approach, I need to stretch out my scope and develop more skills.
