Drunken Fairytales
graphite on toned paper
Besides the prompt of "Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy at the Easter Bunny's birthday party" I pulled inspiration and reference to the stories I heard in my childhood. Santa Claus has always been Saint Nicholas in my household, so instead of using traditional white Santa as my blueprint I strived to have santa resemble the picture in my mind of Saint Nic, not the version of him that came down the chimney, but the one that left clementines and chocolate coins in my shoes when I left them outside.
The Tooth fairy was a whole other venture. When drawing her I tried to summon my pictures of when I knew her in her real glory, the recurring images that formed at five years old when my sister told me she had seen her taking her tooth.
Whenever I think of these three creatures I instantly have memories surface, and instead of doing the easy thing and portraying them based in their traditional selves I strived to put them in my own personal narrative based on my experiences.
I decided to create a graphite illustration to add a monochrome feel to the busyness of the scene. Toned paper added another dimension and collaborated with the graphite to created a calm looking experience. The materials I used added an element to the work where the looker has too create their own narrative and have an emotional response to to work, rather than being distracted by bold loud colors.
