Circle prompt midterm

Girlhood sleeping

colored pencil, watercolor

circle

My inspiration for this piece was a drawing I did when I was about 8. I have recently been inspired by the artists from my old storybooks such as Viktor Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov,  Arthur Rackham, and Florence Harrison. I think that an important component of being and artist is going back to your roots by revisiting your earlier years.

Watercolor has always been a part of my life. Since first grade everyday my class and I played with different pigments, and experimented with hope much paint we could get on our clothes. I chose watercolor because it has always been dear to me, the smell reminds me of my grandmothers studio, and craft time at home in the playroom. I love this paper. The texture, the edges the thickness is perfect. When I heard the concept of five by four circles I immediately thought of this idea I had been itching to do. I created  a bit of disorder of the circles to make them look more fluid and fabric like. I did my sketch in brown colored pencil, and then went over with a few layers of watercolor. I chose vibrant colors, and added a dreamy, starry background  to add playfulness and a fairytale like quality.

I have just recently found this old drawing and I was very called to it. Doing a piece inspired by my childhood goes along with my personal journey of revisiting the hurt and dysfunctionality of my most fundamental years of development. I used this process as a reflection of not only my life so far but my life in relation to creativity.
