How can we reflect our childhood/past and connect with our inner child with our art?
Around the holidays one oftenly becomes nostalgic, I recently found an old drawing of mine I did when I was about 8. It inspired me to adopt imaginative childish ways of drawing. The kind inspired by Grims fairy tales and picture books. I got out my old picture books and sketchbooks and began to draw out of my imagination with my old crayon kit I was gifted at age 6.
I used a old watercolor painting from elementary school for my canvas. I found it difficult to draw with crayons, even more so than oil pastels, In order to draw a pigmented line I had to press really hard.
I tried to think what the kind of drawings I did when I was younger. My teacher had us draw every year a house, person and a tree. It was a way to check in with us on how we were doing she later told me, how a child chooses to present these three things can indicate a lot about themselves or their home life. Since I already know this it wasn't a possibility for me to render this exercise completely. I used it as a way to reflect on how I feel in my mind and in my home. This practice was a deeper form of meditation for me and also allowed me to process my connection to my past and younger self.
