Kitchen Scene
Dish towel, acrylic paint, gesso
9"12"
In this project, I aimed to create a scene that tells a story. My family and friends always gather in the kitchen during parties and holidays. My mom brings a sense of lightness and collaboration to this space. This picture captures the joy and warmth of the kitchen while challenging the gender norms that often portray mothers as the sole caregivers in that environment. While feeding loved ones is an important aspect of motherhood and parenting, I wanted to present it in a more community-oriented way.
I used a dish towel as my canvas, created a small border within it, and began layering gesso. I started adding acrylic paint, gently forming shapes and incorporating color. This painting took a while to complete. It was difficult to get the paint to sit on the fabric how I wanted and took a while to finish covering the whole space despite it being small.
