ASTEROIDS
This week in Science we were learning about Asteroids. The children had the opportunity to link in what they learnt from Science to come into the kitchen to make Asteroids. Each ingredient used was a representation of the elements that makes up an Asteroid.
This was a great visualisation and hands on experience for the children to understand the elements and what an asteroid is made up of.
The children enjoyed the whole experience and there was definitely a buzz in the air.
WHO DOESN'T LOVE WAFFLES? WELL THE SENIORS DO.
We have been having so much fun on our Fridays with our "Fun Friday" activities. The seniors have been participating in groups in Art, Stem, PE games and Cooking. Such a fun way to learn, by doing.
In cooking we made our own waffle by calculating our recipe with our Maths knowledge. We worked on division and used our fractions to work it all out. This was a great way to link our Maths into the kitchen.
We also learnt about the effects of sugar and how we can have sugar, but a healthier version. We made our own chocolate sauce with no refined sugar , and it was delicious.
Stay tuned for the recipe to our Chocolate Sauce.
Homemade Pizza
There is nothing better than a homemade pizza. These bases do not require lots of ingredients, but it does require time and patience.
Pizza originated in Naples, Italy and is made very differently to how pizza is made in Australia. Ingredients are minimal and simple.
Create your own pizza with your favourite toppings like bacon, pineapple, capsicum, mushrooms, salami, ham, pumpkin, zucchini, prosciutto, prawns, italian sausage the choices are endless. Use your imagination and create your own.
ART IN THE KITCHEN
Have some art fun in the kitchen and create your own piece of art using scraps or items from the kitchen. You can use things like, potato, banana, orange and apple peels, shell of avocado, offcuts of fruits and vegetables, seeds, slices of fruit or blueberries for eyes., lettuce leaves. There are so many things in the kitchen that you can use.
Watch the video below of Arcimboldo's portraits using fruits, vegetables, flowers, scraps etc. This will give you an idea of what this looks like.
Draw a picture that you want to create using your scraps or things from your kitchen. You need to do this with a big person ,so you can make sure that what you chose to use in your picture is safe and you are allowed to use it.
What is your picture going to be of? It could be a rainbow, a mountain, the clouds, a person, an animal, favourite cartoon character, a person, the list is endless.
Do not use food that you will not be eating as it is not about wasting food. If you are not going to eat your creation then use food scraps.
Below are some examples

Friday is Devonshire Tea Time
What do you think is a Devonshire Tea?? Devonshire Tea comprises of a pot of tea and scones with jam and clotted cream or as we know it, whipped cream.
There is debate as to what is the better way to eat scones with jam and cream. Traditionally the scones are split in half, the cream spread on both halves first and then the jam is topped on top of the cream. It is however acceptable to put the jam on first, and then a dollop of cream.
HOW DO YOU EAT YOUR SCONES WITH CREAM AND JAM.........?? Whichever way you like to eat scones, they are a great way to have an afternoon tea with family and friends.
Follow the recipe below and give the yummy scone recipe a go... you will not be disappointed!

HEALTHY BREAKFAST IDEAS
Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, especially whilst you are learning at school. Majority of children are asleep for at least 8 hours a night, to then wake in the morning at 7-7.30am. In the morning it is important to break the fast with BREAKFAST. From the time we go to bed to the time we wake up our body is asleep fasting and resting. Imagine waking up and rushing out the door with no drink or food, because, sometimes we can run late.
I am sure this has happened before. If this does happen, grab a glass of water with lemon and grab a banana or a piece of toast. The idea is to break the fast from sleeping. By doing this it gets our bodies and brains working again, ready to tackle a day of learning at school. If you have nothing, then the brain is still asleep and sluggish.
If you do have time in the morning, a way to get the body and brain really ready for your day, is to have a healthy breakfast. Below will be some healthier options to enjoy breakfast, and to get you ready for your day. You never know it may even get you up a bit earlier, so you can enjoy these yummy options.
Watch the video below on how to make a fluffy omelette.
Breakfast Wrap
Watch the video opposite on how to make a delicious Breakfast Wrap. This recipe contains eggs. If you cannot eat them, you can make the same wrap with bacon, cheese and avocado or whatever else you like. Scroll down as there are other egg free options. If you cannot have dairy, use the cheese substitute that you can have.
Eggs are a great protein source to have as a breakfast option. They keep you full for a long time, so you can learn all morning and not have the rumbles in your stomach.
You can use whatever wraps you like, but remember most wraps contain lots of sugar and other extra ingredients that is not needed. I used the ones from Coles as they have the least amount of ingredients or Pita wraps are always a great option.

From the discussions in class re Heathy Living you have all identified that living a healthy life includes lots of contributing factors like, getting enough sleep, drinking water, mindfulness, being grateful, being inclusive, eating a balanced diet and exercise. In regards to our bodies there are 3 very important things we need to remember to do everyday to keep us healthy. Look at the infographic below to help you identify what you need to add to your lifestyle to keep you healthy. ARE THERE SOME THINGS THAT YOU CAN ADD TO YOUR LIFESTYLE TO MAKE YOU HEALTHIER?
guacamole DIP
Avocados are a fruit, but their use is more savoury than sweet. Use avocado as a spread on your sandwich instead of butter or margarine or add to a smoothie for a creamy texture . Avocados are a great healthy afternoon snack, or even better with a poached egg, or vegemite on toast for breakfast. Try the guacamole dip above and eat it with crackers or natural corn chips.
Avocados are a good source of vitamin E and are also rich in vitamin C. They have plenty of antioxidants, to protect the body and are a ‘heart smart’ choice. Avocados are a good source of fibre which is needed for our digestive system to function properly. enjoy what this amazing fruit can offer.

HONEYCOMB
Honeycomb is a fun kitchen experiment do. The sugar and the golden syrup CHANGE their form by using heat and Bi Carb Soda. The heat from the stove melts the sugar crystals and turns it into a liquid. Do not rush the process. Let the sugar dissolve and mix with the golden syrup evenly. Watch what happens when you add the Bi Carb Soda, it is a great science experiment.
Tips for mums and dads
Do not touch the sugar while it is melting. Give it a stir when it melts to combine the sugar, water and syrup. You want it to be silky smooth and a rich golden colour, so when you add the Bi Carb Soda it fluffs up and aerates with tiny bubbles.
Be extra careful, as the sugar will boil to a very hot temperature.
perception
This term we will be exploring the meaning of PERCEPTION. How does this relate to the kitchen? There are two ways in the kitchen, that perception can be understood. Perceptions are built from our experiences and senses.
How we interpret them is influenced by our experiences and our thoughts. For example, smelling the scent of baking cinnamon rolls. When you walk in the kitchen and you smell the aroma of cinnamon, this is the sensation of smell. It makes you feel comfort as it gives you a sense of warmth eating one with a hot chocolate. The perception may be, “Mmm, this smells like the yummy scrolls Grandma used to bake, when we we went to her house."
Or it can be that you will not like any vegetable because it is green. You associate them to being too healthy for you so you automatically decide that you don't like them, even if you haven't even tried them before. This is our only our perception. It is a thought that we have put into our mind.
In the kitchen colour, shape, and texture plays a big part to classify foods that we like and dislike. Some people don't like eating a fresh tomato but they will eat pasta sauce because it is not chunky and squishy. Sometimes we talk ourselves into not liking something because of what it looks and tastes like or from our past experiences or expectations.
The brain is a powerful organ that can be changed at anytime. Our thoughts play a big part in who we are and what we feel. If we keep thinking that we don't like something, then chances are you won't, as you block that part of the brain and talking yourself into not liking it. But if we change our way of thinking like "I haven't tried this before but I am willing to give it a go", then automatically you have opened your mind up to the possibility. This is not just in the kitchen but in our everyday lives. Remember it takes 5 bites to change your perception of a food, you just need to keep trying.
Watch the video opposite, to see how we set our thoughts to not change, but with a different growth mindset, change is possible.
