ASTEROIDS

This week in Science we were learning about Asteroids. The children had the opportunity to link in what they learnt from Science to come into the kitchen to make Asteroids. Each ingredient used was a representation of the elements that makes up an Asteroid.

This was a great visualisation and hands on experience for the children to understand the elements and what an asteroid is made up of.

The children enjoyed the whole experience and there was definitely a buzz in the air.

SPANISH OMELETTE

This dish is a fantastic way to get extra vegetables in your diet or to use left over vegetables from dinner the night before.

It can be eaten as a quick breakfast, a tasty lunch or a dinner with a yummy salad.

Be adventurous with your fillings as there are so many combinations you can add.

ENJOY

ART IN THE KITCHEN

Have some art fun in the kitchen and create your own piece of art using scraps or items from the kitchen. You can use things like, potato, banana, orange and apple peels, shell of avocado, offcuts of fruits and vegetables, seeds, slices of fruit or blueberries for eyes., lettuce leaves. There are so many things in the kitchen that you can use.

  1. Watch the video below of Arcimboldo's portraits using fruits, vegetables, flowers, scraps etc. This will give you an idea of what this looks like.

  2. Draw a picture that you want to create using your scraps or things from your kitchen. You need to do this with a big person ,so you can make sure that what you chose to use in your picture is safe and you are allowed to use it.

  3. What is your picture going to be of? It could be a rainbow, a mountain, the clouds, a person, an animal, favourite cartoon character, a person, the list is endless.

  4. Do not use food that you will not be eating as it is not about wasting food. If you are not going to eat your creation then use food scraps.

  5. Below are some examples

  6. Take a photo of your artwork and send it to: lrigon@spadoreen.catholic.edu.au

IS THERE A REASON TO COOK??

I received an email today from two sisters at our school. It bought a huge smile to my face to see what they cooked together. Something that was written in that email that stood out to me and it has stuck with me. They said that they cooked for "NO REASON AT ALL". Was it really for no reason? Is there a reason to cook?Sometimes we do things, that we think there is no purpose or we cannot see what the reason is.

So yes there is a reason to cook. You see the reason is to just get in the kitchen or do an activity to just BE in the moment. Whether it is by yourself or with your brother, sister, mum, dad, grandparent or friend on a zoom. It is the joy of creating, sharing, talking, laughing and just spending time with yourself and your thoughts or with someone else. Cooking for some is sometimes a chore because we have no time, or are not confident in the kitchen, or not prepared, but what it brings when we achieve a meal or baked is the best and proudest feeling. From there it opens up conversations, sharing and most of all togetherness, that boosts our WELLBEING.

So go on, get in the kitchen and have fun cooking!!

OVERNIGHT OATS

Oats are full of fibre, vitamins and minerals. They are so full of goodness that is a fantastic and easy option for a snack or your breakfast. Add fruit to your oats to add some sweetness instead of the unnecessary sugar that is in breakfast cereals and snack bars.

Follow me in my kitchen and see how to make Overnight Oats.

BURRITO BOWLS

Who doesn't love a burrito or a taco? This quick meal is a favourite of everyone's. It is packed with flavour with all the yummy things. Instead of placing all of the ingredients in a taco or a burrito you add it to a bowl.... so it is basically a deconstructed burrito/taco. Add all the flavours and scoop it up with Corn chips. Absolutely delicious and yes you can make this at home.

Use the recipe opposite to make your burrito bowl or you can add it to your tacos or Yoghurt flatbread wraps, (see recipe below).

You add each component to your bowl to make your own Burrito Bowl..... and don't forget the corn chips to scoop it up.

ENJOY

Watch the video below to see how to make flatbread.

Opposite is the recipe to make taco's using chicken instead of mince meat.

our land our stories

This term, we will be exploring the world of Indigenous Bush Tucker and Food. For thousands of years, Aboriginal Australians have been surviving on “bush tucker” and foods from the land. The outback is realistically their pantry. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were hunters and gatherers, so they would hunt the wild to provide meat and they would gather fruits, seeds and insects from the outback for their daily meals. Every season was different and would provide them with different types of food, making their diet filled with lots of variety.

But how do we cook with this in the 20th Century. Chefs from across the world are now using fruits, plants, flowers, seeds and nuts native to them in their cuisine. In Australia Warrigal greens, youlk (bush carrots), bunya nuts, quandong, wattleseed, pigface, finger limes, lilly pilly and lemon myrtle are examples of Australian bush foods that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have now introduced to Australian cuisine.

recipe of the week

The Indigenous people fed off the land and nature to survive. Through the years we have progressed in our food choices, but nothing goes past eating fresh and healthy food from what Mother Nature provides to us.

Alot of our food today is very much processed and made in a factory, with lots of chemicals added, which is not what the human body can realistically digest.

As in our previous cooking classes, you all identified that when you ate sugary and salty processed foods that you felt sick in the stomach, tired, low in energy, headaches, rashes.

Our food that fills the supermarket aisles, is not like the food the Indigenous people hunted for. It is more of packaged food and a quick meal, as we have become very busy. Now that you are home more, it is a great time to get back in the kitchen and explore more healthier options, which can still feel like you are having a treat.

Like the Indigenous people, cooking from scratch is definitely a better way to cook, as it is not processed. Our Friday cooking classes will be recipes that include fresher ways of cooking and showing you different ways of cooking from scratch.

Berries are a great antioxidant that are low in calories but very high in fibre, vitamins and minerals. They are an inflammation fighter in the body and are a superfood to protect the body against disease. These are great to make homemade jam, add to smoothies or healthy desserts like the beautiful and delicious RASPBERRY COCONUT SLICE below.

Raspberry Coconut Slice

Damper is a type of bread that was made by hand, usually by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women within the tribe.

First the women would source local seeds and gather these into a large dish. They would then use millstones to slowly grind the seeds creating a flour.

They would then add small splashes of water throughout the process to create a paste, then a dough. The dough would be heated over the coals of a fire until it was cooked, then served to the tribe.
