Why did you choose to study in Seng Kang Secondary School?
I remember arriving at Seng Kang Secondary School for the Open House being greeted so enthusiastically by the Student Councillors. At the Open House, I interacted with some students who were amiable and forthcoming, even though I had just gotten to know them. I was indeed satisfied with my choice of joining the school, which was vibrant and welcoming!
How have the various programmes in the school shaped you as a person?
As a Sports Leader and Hockey Captain, I have learnt values such as self-discipline and resilience. I believe that it is important to do the correct thing even when no one is watching, and it takes a lot of courage to do this. During CCA training sessions, I understood the importance of communicating well with my teammates to work well together. I have become more open-minded and willing to consider different ideas for the good of the team. Being in hockey has also taught me how to manage my time better. Since I had multiple commitments, such as training for the national and school teams, as well as homework, I had to learn to plan my time wisely. I have learnt that it is important to focus on the important tasks first, instead of procrastinating. In addition, I am glad that throughout my four years as a Sports Leader, I have been able to learn so much and strengthen my character.
Describe some of the most memorable experiences in your four years in Seng Kang Secondary School.
The most memorable experience was when my team won the National School Games Hockey Competition in 2018. As it was my first time competing in the finals, it was very exciting and cool. Even though my teammates and I were very nervous before the game, we managed to overcome our fears and clinch the championship title. Celebrating our win together was a highlight. We were overjoyed that we were rewarded for our hard work and effort. Another memorable moment was when I attended Hockey Camp in 2019. It was a 3-day, 2-night event and we had a lot of fun taking part in the activities organised, such as cycling and high elements. During the camp, I bonded and had fun with my teammates.
Another unforgettable experience was when I first received news that I was the Best Sportsgirl for hockey. The competition for this award has always been intense, so I was privileged to be given the honour. I have always thought that I am just an average girl who is trying her utmost best. Receiving the award has made me realise that I am more capable than I thought I was!
What do you think contributed to you being awarded the SSSC Sportsgirl Award?
I feel that my passion for hockey is a key factor. When I first joined hockey, I thought that it was a rather difficult sport and I was unsure if I would be able to play it well. However, due to the coaching and the motivation from my coach and peers, I persevered. Another reason which contributed to the award would be the encouragement I received from my coach, Coach Pris. Even though my teammates and I did not perform up to standard at times, she would still motivate us and give us pep talks to encourage us. She has never given up on us and always wants us to do better.
Lastly, I would like to thank my parents for supporting me in my hockey journey. Even though hockey is a rough sport, they still allowed me to participate in it as they wanted me to pursue my passion. Even though I got injured sometimes, they did not stop me from playing hockey. I would also like to thank my hockey teachers, Mr Khyber, Mr Lishanth and Mr Lin, for encouraging us to do our best, and my PE teacher, Mdm Gan, for giving me valuable advice on what to do when I felt lost at times. These teachers helped me to understand myself better and I am grateful to them for that.
