Information Sheet -O-Level Exercise & Sports Science (ESS)

Introduction

GCE O-Level Exercise and Sports Science (ESS) is an interdisciplinary applied subject where students would be grounded in the disciplines of sports science with an understanding of sports sociology. Through the study of O-Level ESS, students would develop disciplinary thinking and practices of the subject and thus interdisciplinary understanding.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Acquire and apply the knowledge in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sports psychology to analyse, evaluate and improve practical performances, with focus on selected exercises and sports;

  2. Develop the movement concepts and motor skills to be proficient in the performance of a team and an individual/dual sports;

  3. Understand the benefits and risks associated with physical exercise and sports to manage personal participation in physical activities;

  4. Examine issues related to sports and participation in physical activities from socio-cultural and global perspectives.

ASSESSMENT

  1. GCE O-Level Exercise and Sports Science (ESS) consists of 2 components, namely:

  • a theory (written examination) component that makes up 40% of the overall grade, and

  • a (practical) coursework component that makes up the remaining 60% of the overall grade.


  1. Students should also expect to be involved in filming and recording videos of their performance of selected skills in their specialized activities. Videos will be submitted for grading and assessment.

  2. Videos of students participating in drills and small sided games will be taken as part of the coursework assessment.


Students must be able to demonstrate:

  • an ability to interrelate planning, performing and evaluating of physical activity

  • an ability to analyse and improve their own as well as others’ performance.

CURRICULUM HOURS

  1. Weekly lesson of up to 5 periods (30 to 35 minutes each period)

  2. Theory: 2 periods, Practical: 3 periods
