Turnaround Kid Tops Cohort at A-Levels, 22 Feb 2020
The report highlighted Javier’s trying family circumstances, with him taking care of his grandparents and mother who suffers from depression. As the pillar of support, he often has to mediate situations at home when his mother’s condition turned for the worse.
In such trying family circumstances, Javier is determined to do well academically as he could not afford to be retained. He spent many hours in the school library and community revising for his exams as conditions at home was not conducive for studying. He also attributed his achievements his History and Literature teachers for allowing him to ‘pay back’ with essays on occasions he was late for consultations. With the additional practices, his results improved significantly at his final year, and eventually topped his cohort at the A-Levels.
While Javier admitted to playing pranks in school, it was his coping mechanism to relief stress and his way to bond his class closer.
Javier was an avid footballer in school. There is an anecdote of a time when his soccer shoes were too worn out, his football team teacher Mr Shawn Ang and discipline teacher gifted a pair to him, as they realised he could not afford a new pair. Their kind gesture motivated him to persevere and continue to contribute to the school’s football team.

How has SKSS and Hockey led to her achievement in life and career?
I can only attribute my achievements and the person I've become today to the guidance and support of the teachers and coaches in SKSS. It is so easy to be stray and hang out with bad crowds during the teenage years, but my teachers and coaches always looked out for me and made sure I stayed on track. They even provided me with plenty of opportunities to improve myself and step out of my comfort zone to lead. It is then through all these leadership camps, overseas conventions and leadership appointments that allowed me to put my skills to the test and improve them.
As mentioned above, the teachers and coaches in SKSS are the most amazing people I've met, they go the extra mile for their students, staying late after hours to help those who are in need, always putting us first and always reminding us to do our best. Having seen how hard the teachers and staff work and how much heart they put into guiding their students, I just felt that it's only right to give back and continue to help my teachers and coaches in guiding the next generation.
SKSS still feels homely and holds a special place in my heart. Till date, I'm still in contact with my teachers and many of my batch mates. It is the feeling of having to be able to know that there are people I can trust and count on that keeps me coming back to SKSS.
I've been playing hockey for about 12 years now. It is still a sport that I play in leagues annually. I learnt and properly picked up skills when I was in SKSS. It didn't only teach me to be a good player, and the game provided me with the opportunity to lead as well. I learned how to manage myself and others.
I want to attribute my growth and successes to my coach Priscilla Koh. If not for her guidance and support, I don't think I will be the person I am today. Coming back to SKSS to coach hockey, it is a way for me to give back as well and teach the next generations and pass on the torch. I am thankful for the opportunity to play hockey for SKSS, Clubs and even the National Team. But playing for SKSS as an underdog was the best feeling, as this means any victories means a lot to us.
Once again I will like to thank all my teachers and coach for all of their hard work and going the extra mile for all their students despite us being a handful.
