I had him for Physics and Maths – one of the “OK” teachers – knew his subjects and knew how to teach them. He had an Adam’s Apple the size of a cricket ball, a voice deep and commanding, and hands the size of spades (and just as hard) – didn’t need a cane, ruler, plimsoll, or T-square to whack you with – just his hand - that was enough to bring any boy with an over-supply of testosterone into line. I remember his name as Mr Whittick, but as there are no records readily available of The Tech Teachers, I cannot check-up, and as such apologise if the name I have used may be wrong.

I learned a great deal from Mr. Whittick and I still remember him wittering on about Count Rumpert and drilling out cannon bores and heat and friction and stuff. Of course, Dick had a bit of a lisp and the bloke was actually called Count Rumford but my notes from then clearly said Rumpert!!! He certainly lived the values of the school motto; he lived in Maidenhead and one year when the Thames was flooded he used to row a boat through the floods to then catch a bus to get to school. Imagine todays teachers doing that? Not!!!!
