I can remember his quiet, nasal voice as I write – nice bloke and could be easily distracted when teaching RI (I don’t think that was his forte subject). He would always give you a lift to school if you missed the train and you timed it right by running the half to the bus stop and arriving before he drove past. I remember him most for roping me in to play cricket for The Tech Old Boys on a number of occasions – as he also lived in Risboro’, he would pick me up at the Black Prince bus stop and return me there after the match– the only time I have ever socialised with a teacher whilst still at school, and found out that they were “actually human”. But alas, no liberty was granted me during class, not even for getting wickets at the weekend.

Nice tolerant teacher with, for then, an enlightened view of teaching.

Mr Burton was a near neighbour and lived in lodgings in Micklefield Road, I cycled to school everyday but if the weather was really bad he would offer a lift in his Blue Standard 8, a real gentleman. He was very proud to relate to me that in the summer holidays he had serviced his car and decoked the engine just with a screwdriver, pliers and an old set of bicycle spanners. I don't think that the salary was very much in those early post war days.
