WTS - Blazer Badge

Item courtesy of Roy Curtis - 1959 to '61

I have just found my "W T S" blazer badge, which was put somewhere safe about 60 years ago.

My intake year was 1958. I was a 13+ entrant and my badge had to be a new one, with W T “S” on it, as Harry Ward "dictated" that only this one was "now allowed" since he had taken over as Head Master.

My mother was not at all impressed by this little “Big I Am”, as she called him.

You see, as many of you will appreciate, we had a tight budget in those days and she had sourced out a second hand School Uniform from another Mum whose son had just left that Summer, and to have to buy a new badge for it, did not seem to be at all practical. Food on the table was far more important than having a badge with a “S” on it, when the one with the ‘’I” was perfectly fine.

Not a good start for me passing the 13 +, and costing a small fortune to kit me out.
