Ivan (Spadger) Sparrow - 1957 to '60
Decent sort of chap – good teacher of art – my main recollection of him is that he always seemed to be nibbling away with his front teeth on a small peppermint or something that he kept in the front of his mouth. He tried to get the School to allow me to continue with art when I chose the engineering path, as Art had to be dropped in favour of Tech. and Geo. Drawing. He obviously saw some potential in me and asked if it would be possible to drop French or another subject in order for me to do art as well as T & G drawing – unfortunately it was not to be. I have often wondered since, whether such a move would have changed my career path in any way – I know it would have been of personal benefit to me as I still enjoy sketching and painting.
John Warner - 1961 to '66
I wasn't much good at art then so couldn't judge his abilities. He used to punish using a length of rubber hose which I had the benefit of once. He did take a group of us sailing to Suffolk on a couple of occasions with Mr "Gonfra" Burton.
