Pero and Sino

Both of these mean “but.”

Use pero to say “but”, as in “however.”

Use sino to say “but”, as in “not this but that instead.”

Use sino in clauses that use “no sólo… sino también” (not only… but also.)

Notice that sino can only be used when there is a negative in the sentence.

• No me gusta el volibol sino el tenis.

• Me gusta el basquetbol, pero no me gusta el fútbol.

• Quiero salir, pero no tengo tiempo.

• Mi padre no sólo habla francés, sino también habla italiano.
