We’ve been together now for many years,
Closely united in our retirement.
Sixty five years of cheers and tears
Could not prepare us for this requirement.
A bout of illness by one of us suffered,
Meant a stay in hospital to recover.
A time of separation to be discovered,
Without the comfort of each other.
All things each day we experience
Now took on a different meaning.
Normal activity then seemed spurious,
Completed in a state of dreaming.
Each meeting then was done as visiting,
In an edifice unlike one’s home;
For him the illness he was suffering
Meant a journey to the unknown.
That time, separation was temporary,
And soon at home we were reunited;
We hope that event which was so scary
Will never more come uninvited.
