I have at different times in my life been asked
“Are you a Jew?”
It always hits me like an ice cold blast,
The question and its avenue.
For those who this question have engaged
Will swear no harm by it is meant;
Their feeling for you will be unchanged
And will not cause adverse event.
The history of the Jews is dire;
For what reason one can only guess;
Why does this inheritance set fire?
Causing hate and pain to progress.
Is it any wonder then
You should not want to be defined?
Not once but again and again
By what your birth has for you designed.
Everyone in this world should be
Described by their actions to be found;
Never should they have to flee
From the hatred of their background.
Discrimination is quite repugnant,
Yet in this world is all too common;
Too many ignore this judgement,
And too often is it left to blossom.
Sometime the perpetrators are unaware,
The pain their attitude does incur;
Let us hope they will despair
When the consequences are laid bare.
