The translation of subtle functional deficits within individuals into population-level effects is identified as a main challenge for the hazard and risk assessment of chemical compounds in fish. It seems to be necessary to improve our knowledge of the effects at different biological levels in order to better assess the ecotoxicological risk. The extrapolation from measures on organisms performed in laboratory to the consequences to population and community viability is not simple.
In practice, one of the only way to link experimental observations to the protected biological unit is the use of mechanistic mathematical models.
For the three-spined stickleback, a first individual-based model based on a dynamic energy budget model was developed at INERIS in order to predict the stickleback population dynamics in mesocosm under ecological conditions. Moreover, thanks to the various experiments conducted in mesocosms, several complete sets of data on the population exposed to different chemicals were obtained. Consequently, we have all the necessary data to transform the “ecological” model to a model able to predict the ecotoxicological effects and evaluate these predictions with several cases. The aim of this phd is therefore to perform this approach.
