Unit stacking

The objectives of the unit stacking model are as follows:

    • Appropriately model combined arms (e.g. eliminate Civilisation II's catapult beats legion)

    • Allow specialisation for tactical / strategic purposes (e.g. a pure cavalry unit for rapid response)

    • Reduce the number of units that the player has to push around the map

The best model I have seen for unit stacking is that in Advanced Tactics. Whilst the model is good, the implementation in the standard ruleset creates too much complexity for the casual player: what's the right mix of Rifle vs SMG vs Machinegun vs Bazooka vs Mortar infantry? And that's just infantry. The player also needs to consider field artillery and tanks.
