Spells
Underlying concepts
Modern science enables us to understand the science behind the magic spells we know and love. The key concepts are as follows:
Manipulation (creation/destruction/changing) of matter
Manipulation (creation/destruction/changing) of energy (electromagnetic/kinetic/molecular kinetic)
Manipulation (creation/destruction/changing) of magnetic fields
Manipulation (creation/destruction/changing) of gravitational fields
Manipulation of the mind
Perception (i.e. taking in information through magical means)

Healing
Healing spells often play a significant role in RPGs, particularly those that use a hitpoint type mechanism. It is often the case that a character can heal him/herself during combat, thus allowing the character to fight many foes in large battles. However, it would be an interesting game dynamic if healing spells were limited to being used out of combat, for example by requiring that they take a few minutes to cast (no character can spare a few minutes in the heat of combat). This would tend to make combat shorter, and more intense, with greater risk resulting from injuries.
