Fire Procedures

1. Students will walk out of the designated exit in a quiet, orderly manner. Each teacher should check the classroom and be the last individual to leave.
2. Staff should be aware of unusual or suspicious boxes, packages, noises, devices, or disturbances in their classroom or in the hallway as they evacuate the building. Do not touch anything that looks suspicious. Report suspicious items to the principal.
3. Teachers will take their class lists of students as they exit the classroom.
4. Teachers will close windows and doors. Doors are to remain unlocked
5. In each class, the student reaching the outside door first will hold it open for the others.
6. Students must go to a designated area that is a safe distance from the building. Evacuation may exceed school property.
7. Students not in the classroom when the alarm sounds should join in the line of the closest class and line up with them. No one should enter the building when the alarm sounds.
8. Teachers are responsible for the students under their supervision and should take attendance, accounting for each child. Once you have taken attendance, hold up your green card to designate all accounted for, and the red card to designate that someone is missing. Children who are unaccounted for are to be reported to the staff member responsible for your area immediately who will report this to the Main Office.
9. The fire drill plan for evacuating the building is posted in each classroom throughout the year. If the normal evacuation route is blocked, use an alternative route as directed by the teacher.
10. The assistant principal will account for all staff.

Tornado, Severe Thunder Storms, Hurricane Procedures

To signal a tornado warning, a signal will be given and the following steps should be taken.

1. Students should proceed to their designated tornado safe area positions against the wall and assume a kneeling position, head down, with hands covering their necks. (Tornado Map locations attached)
2. Students in unsafe locations at the time of the drill will go to assigned locations at the direction of the teacher.
3. Teachers are to close classroom doors after student’s exit into the tornado safe area.
4. Quiet is extremely important so that any necessary directions may be heard in the tornado safe area.
5. Teachers should keep their class rosters with them during the drill to verify student classroom count. They should stay behind their classes to be sure students are following the drill or emergency procedure. The teacher should take a kneeling position if a strike is imminent.

The all-clear signal will be a verbal command or public address announcement by the principal or designee.

Lockdown Code: “Lockdown“

During a school lockdown, all students should remain in their classrooms. This includes students in portable classrooms/gym.
