Avoid sending children to the nurse’s office for very minor medical reasons. Real needs should not be ignored; but tiny scratches and vague complaints take up much valuable time. Student’s whose temperature does not exceed 99.8 and who appear to be feeling well will be sent back to class. All children who come to the clinic must have a clinic pass.
Medication authorization form must be completed and signed for all medication given at school (prescription and over the counter).
Over-the-counter medications can only be given for one (1) week without a doctor’s authorization.
All medication must be in the original container with student’s name on the container.
Inhalers will be kept with the student unless there is a specific time it must be used at school, and then a parent note must authorize this. This is a short term only, and exact dates must be provided.
Mass hearing and vision screening of kindergarten, third, and fifth grades will be conducted early in the year. Teachers and parents will be notified of failures. Hearing failures will be re-screened.
TEACHER INFORMATION REGARDING THE CLINIC
Health records will include parents’ signed permission for hearing and vision screening. If teachers have any concerns about a student’s hearing or vision, let the school nurse know. The school nurse will conduct screenings throughout the year with parents’ permission.
When you send a student to the clinic, send written information describing the specific problem on the clinic referral pass. This helps solve problems more expediently and helps the triage process.
The clinic’s busiest time is between 11:00 – 12:00 with most medications so please, except for emergencies; hold routine problems during those times each day.
Please give the school nurse 24 hours notice if you are taking a class on a field trip, especially if you will be out of the building during lunch.
The school nurse strives to maintain complete care plans for students with chronic health problems (diabetes, asthma, seizure activity, and severe allergies). Please include the school nurse in sharing communications about any health issues.
