Essay on Kangaroo Island.

[1910] The following, written by Master Ralph Miller, aged 12, secured the prize presented by Mr A. Daw, for the best essay on Kangaroo Island, at the recent school examination at Kingscote :

This Island was discovered and named by Captain Mathew Flinders, in the year 1802, He also named Investigator Strait, Backstairs Passage, and Kangaroo Head. When Flinders landed at Kangaroo Head there were many kangaroos there. They were so tame that the men were able to knock them over with out resistance. But since then they have been hunted for their skins to such a great extent that the Government had them protected, lest they should become extinct. When the 'Old Pioneers' came to South Australia their first landing place was Kingscote. Here they planted the first fruit tree that was planted in the State by white men. This was a mulberry tree, which bears fruit to this day. Then after a time it was found out that the water supply was not too good, so most of them moved to where Adelaide now stands. One of those who stayed was a Mr Giles, who stated in his diary that it cost him as much as 9/4 a week to supply his family with water. He also said that one grain of barley sown gave a two-thousand fold yield. Since then barley from Kangaroo Island has taken first prize against the world. This shows that Kangaroo Island land must be good. The products of Kangaroo Island are wheat, barley, oats, rye, wool, yacca gum and eucalyptus oil (the finest in tbe world,) while vegetables can also be produced in abundance. On the north and east coasts there are many good harbours, and fish are plentiful. But the south coast is rough, rugged and dangerous to shipping, to assist which we have three very fine lighthouses, namely, Cape Borda on the west (most important in the Commonwealth), Cape De. Couedie on the south (most modern and powerful light in the world), and Cape Willoughby on the east (the biggest in the State). The largest town on K.I. is Kingscote, the next Hog Bay, and the next Muston, on the American River, where the Commonwealth Salt Coy. are producing some very fine salt. So after all is said and done K.I. is not too bad a place.
