VALEDICTORY

MR AND MRS D. C. MURRAY.

Kangaroo Island is truly unfortunate in the loss it sustains from time to time by the departure of some of its most progressive residents. Situated as it is it can ill afford to lose anyone who has its interests at heart, and this is especially so in the departure of Mr D. C. Murray from the district, who leaves on Monday to take up a position in the city. Mr Murray has been a resident of the Island for about eight years, and during that time has associated himself with every movement brought forward for the advancement of the district. He has proved his worth as a townsman, and, as speakers remarked, was a straightforward business man whose word was his bond. Mr and Mrs Murray will carry with them the respect and goodwill of ail their friends and every good wish for their future prosperity and happiness. At the farewell banquet tendered them on Thursday evening, when, at the invitation of Cr. J. Turner (Chairman of the Kingsoote Council) about 40 guests assembled at the District Hall, the eulogistic remarks passed by speakers testified to the esteem in which tbe departing guests were held and the enthusiastic way in which Mr Murray had always worked to further the Island's interests. The remarks of Crs. Turner and Daw spent his useful career as a councillor, referred to his thorough knowledge of the wants of the district and the way in which he had always done the best he could for the rate payers, and there is no doubt but that they will find it a difficult task to fill the position rendered vacant in the council by his departure. Reference was also made by speakers to the interest taken by Mr Murray in the Tourist and Progress Association. This body has striven to increase the popularity of the Island as a holiday resort, but it had been handicapped by tbe lack of interest shown by residents. If they had shown similar enthusiasm to that displayed by Mr Murray, who since its inception has held the office of President, we have no hesitation in saying that the Island as a holiday resort would be more widely known and Kingscote would be in a far better position to cater for the tourist traffic, which means so much to the prosperity of the Island. The K.I. A. & H. Society would also lose a valuable member by Mr Murray's departure, and the secretary (Mr A. H. Anderson) referred to the enthusiastic manner in which Mr Murray had worked to make the shows successful. His interest in the stock and horse sections especially had been one of the main factors in making those classes the chief attractions, and it is hoped that his place will be filled by someone capable of carrying out the work in like manner. Another body to suffer is the Kingscote Rifle Club, and the Captain (Mr V. Cook) expressed the regret all members would feel at Mr Murray's departure. He was an enthusiastic member and a good shot, one whom the club could ill afford to lose. Reference was also made to the willing manner in which Mrs Murray had worked in social and other functions promoted in the town, and the regret ladies would feel at her departure. The toast, ' to the health and prosperity of Mr and Mrs Murray,' was proposed by Cr. Daw, and was enthusiastically honored. The supporters were Messrs J. Turner, V. Cook, R. L. Barrett, A. H. Anderson, M. Smith M. B. Chapman, H. Rofe, R. J. and W Cook, F. Mawby, R. Chapman, W. H. Partridge, Rev. Longman and Dr. Tackaberry. Mr Murray, in responding, thanked all for the kind remarks made concerning Mrs Murray and himself, They much regretted leaving tbe Island where they had made so many good friends, and would always look back with pleasure to their stay here. He still had interests in the Island, and hoped, in his future occupation, to do K.I. many a good turn. He feelingly thanked all for the honor done them. Other toasts honored ware "The Ladies," The Island,' ' Our Boys at the Front,' ' The Press,' and others. A tribute was paid by the chairman (Mr Turner) to Mrs R. J. Cook, and ladies who assisted her, for the excellent manner in which arrangements generaliy were carried out. During the evening much hitherto hidden vocal talent was brought to light. Those contributing to the programme were, Mesdames C. L. Snelling, M. B. Chapman and M. Smith, and Messrs. J. Turner, R. J. Cook, V. Cook, W. H. Partridge, M. Smith, H. Rofe, A. Daw and R. Chapman . The banquet opened with the toast of 'The King,' and the National Anthem, and ended at a late hour with the singing of 'Auld Lang Syne.' An apology tor non-attendance was received from Mr J. B. Bellamy.
