OBITUARY.

(1922, August 12). The Kangaroo Island Courier (Kingscote, SA : 1907 - 1951), p. 2. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article191545448Kangaroo Island Courier (Kingscote, SA : 1907 - 1951), Saturday 12 August 1922, page 2

Sincere regret was felt throughout the district on Tuesday, the 1st inst., when news of the death of Mr Geo. W. Ayliffe was received. Mr Ayliffe was well known and highly respected throughout this district, where he resided tor many years, and was a brother of Mr G. G. Ayliffe, clerk of the Kingscote District Council. In referring to Mr Ayliffe's demise the Maitland correspondent to ' The Register ' of recent date, says :— ' Seldom has the Maitland district been so stirred as during the past week when the news of the death of Mr G. W. Ayliffe became known. Among his relatives and friends the knowledge of his serious illness had been shared for several days, and there was a deep and sincere regret that a life so full of usefulness was ending at she early age of 40 years. Mr Ayliffe won the respect of all sections as one whose friendship was valued, and whose business dealings were marked by honor and rectitude. He was a son of Mr G. H. Ayliffe, who for many years was secretary to the Central Board of Health and City Coroner in Adelaide. As a young man Mr Ayliffe was on the staff of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, and saw service at various stations in Australia and the Malay Peninsula. He was an accomplished horsemen, and as an amateur rider won trophies at race meetings while stationed at Penang. On his return to Australia Mr Ayliffe left the Telegraph Company, and took up land on Kangaroo Island to establish an orchard. In 1914 he removed to Maitland, and before many months his special gifts had gained for him the secretarial position of the Liberal Union District Committee, the Northern Yorke Peninsula Football Association, and the Maitland Liberal Union, and the clerkship of the District Council of Yorke Peninsula. From March, 1916, until the signing of the armistice in November 1918, he served in the war, mainly on the French front as a non-commissioned officer, and he took part in the final big Australian campaign which pierced the Hindenburg line. On his return to Maitland he resumed his duties with the district council and the District Committee of the Liberal Union, and the football association, and added to the list the position of council over-seer, representative of Louis Dreyfus and Co., and several agencies. He identified himself with the local branch of the Returned Soldiers' League (of which he was President at the time of his death), the Repatriation Committee (as secretary), the committee of the Maitland A. H. and F. Society, the Maitland branch of the Y.P. Railway League {as treasurer), and the A.N.A. (one year as secretary), and the golf club. Some months ago severe influenza weakened him, and apparently the illness allied itself with the undermining effects of the heavy strain imposed upon his constitution by the war. He has left a widow (daughter of Mr G. H. Kelly) and two little children.'
