1510 L/Cpl Harry SIMMONDS. 1Oth Btn, 50th Btn & 70th Btn Wounded in Action - no memorial on KI

Harry’s father Captain George Silas SIMMONDS died in 1913 and is buried in Penneshaw Cemetery. His mother was Elizabeth LASHMAR. Harry was born at Birkenhead on 19 February 1891. He married Dorothy Grace NEAVE in St Bartholomew’s, Norwood on 3 December 1917.

After the war he did a stint as lighthouse keeper on Althorpe Island. He then had a trading ketch Wellington which caught fire at Port Adelaide. The family moved to Kingscote where he reverted to fishing in the cutter Vectris. This was wrecked at Dashwood Bay in July 1932. Simmonds was captain of the Cheopis from about 1934 to 1941. He later enlisted in the Small Ships Section, USA SOS SWPA .

After the war he returned to the Pacific and had a banana plantation in the Philippines and for a time joined a Norwegian shipping line trading between Japan and New York. Before retiring he was fishing with Nils Swanson and running a cray fishing boat Peloris. With health failing he went to Sydney to join his daughter. He died there in July 1973 and is buried in an unmarked grave at Botany Cemetery in Matraville.
