Tpr. George Rothwell Seager, 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment, was killed in action on 7th August 1915. His photograph was published on 30th September 1915. [1]
His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Carew Reynell, [2] wrote to his mother about the circumstances of his death on 12th August 1915.
“Your son was a gallant youth and a good soldier. He was always a volunteer for any dangerous mission, and didn't know what fear was. At the time he was killed the fire was very hot, and the man working the machine gun had just been wounded; and, although it wasn't his place to be there, your son immediately jumped into his position, and kept firing the gun until he was shot. I hope the knowledge that he died thus as a volunteer in the post of danger will to some extent be a consolation in your sorrow at the loss of so bright a boy.” [3]
A report of his death furnished more details about his past service.
“Lance-Corporal George Rothwell Seager, who was killed in action on August 7, at the battle of Lone Pine, was only 17 years of age. He was the youngest of three brothers at the front, Captain H. W. H. Seager, of the 10th Battalion, [4] and Trooper E. C. Seager, [5] of the 4th Light Horse (Victoria), being the other two. He was in the naval action against the Germans last spring, and on his return home he joined the machine gun section of the 9th Light Horse.” [6]
Originally from Gippsland, Victoria, he was the 17 year-old son of Clarendon and Alexandra Seager, of Middlethorpe, Mitcham, Adelaide, South Australia.
