Harold Williams Hastings SEAGER

Profile pic major seager

Major Harold SEAGER M.C., V.D.. He and his brother went to KI in 1924 and had a pastoral lease at Hawke’s Nest, Hn of MacGillivray. He married Joyce Debenham TEARNE in 1925 and she moved to KI. Their old house is now derelict and Hawke’s Nest is now owned by Geoff and Pat Brooksby. Seagers Road is nearby.

Previous leaseholder was 2631 Samuel Hercules Leopold FIELDER 18/3rd Light Horse. He was found dead on the property on 25 January 1921 and after being buried at Kingscote Cemetery his body was exhumed for an inquest.

His Primary schooling as at Christ Church Grammar School in Punt Road, South Yarra and secondary schooling at the Pulteney Street School (now Pulteney Grammar). My information is that he was born at Powlett Plains, just out of Inglewood on July 6, 1893. His father, Clarendon James SEAGER (who is buried at Kingscote Cemetery) was a former captain in the 8th Hussars. His grandfather was Lieut-General Edward Seager C.B. (1812-1883) who took part in the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava. Hugh Seager fought against the Spanish Armada and Sir Halsall Seager served in the land forces at the same time.

Hal was one of three brothers who served in the A.I.F., L/Cpl George SAEGER, also with Light Horse. He was KIA at Gallipoli in August 1915. No real connection with KI apart from his brothers going there after the war and his parents retiring there. His mother Alexandrina nee Laidlaw supervised the Adelaide Cheer-Up Hut.. He sustained severe head wounds on 26 September 1917. On November 14, 1924 he and his brother, Edward Clarendon Seager, ex 4th Light Horse, obtained a pastoral lease at Hawke’s Nest. His wife to be, Joyce Debenham Tearne, arrived on KI on the Karatta in January 1925. - Chris Ward
