We will be asking Dr Brown, Why and How the story of Hypatia has had an influence on him;
1 [ Hypatia – born in Alexandria-Egypt 370 A.D., first woman astronomer, mathematician, inventor, and a philosopher of Plato
Dr Bob Brown with Tony Jones on Q&A 23 Apr 2012, said that he was inspired by the story of Hypatia
Thanks and courtesy of ABC TV, have a quick listen [ www.abc.net.au/tv/qanda/txt/s3478779.htm ]
6:30pm Q what elements of Hypatia’s story, solidified your conviction back then ?
the High court challenge was won on the fact ‘the right to legislate for the Environment’ was not in the Australian Constitution
Q What Environmental issues were you listing to convince the government to stop the building of the Franklin Dam ?
Ans . ………….Aboriginal Caves/Hand Stencils/Aboriginal Tools/Habitat loss for endangered spices
You successfully demonstrated your gutsy position about the Franklin Dam in the 70’s, you served 19 days in jail for it,
your attention is now on the Kimberley’s coast WA, we understand it to be home to the largest humpback Whale calving grounds
Q What strategies will you put in place to stop Woodside’s planned gas hub near Broome Western Australia?
2 [ The impact of Dams on rivers and how best to look after the Nile river and its precious water that feeds the Mediterranean sea ]
Archaeological sites have been flooded by lake Nasser / Compulsory immigration of Nubians with no land compensation till today
Historical monuments / Salt Balance / Drainage / 120,000 people were resettled in Sudan / loss of sediments
Mediterranean fishing declined / ……
China has now the world largest hydropower Dam [ Yangtze River in the Hubei province ] it has just switched on all of its generators,
generating Tera Power to the size of 15 nuclear reactors = 22,500 MegaWatts = 10 times bigger than Aswan High Dam, and now we’re
told Ethiopia within the next 10 years, will have 2 of the same dams finished on the blue Nile river.
Q What would you say to Mr Meles Zenawi [ Ethiopian Prime Minister ] about the negative impact of Dams on the Nile river
Mr Alemayehu Tegenu [ Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy ]
Mr Mostafa Hussein Kamel [ Egyptian Environment Minister ]
Christine Milne resigned from her [ IUCN ] Vice-President position 2008 International Union for Conservation of Nature to focus
on the Greens Party
Q Are you currently considering a position on the global stage, a Board member perhaps with UNESCO /
World Council for sustainable Development / Nile Basin Initiative ?
CONVICTION, either by a state or religion. Hypatia and many others like her, killed for their conviction to a system / new horizon / for talking in science parables, others killed by the state authorities for not following their constitutional belief system. Do these stories make you angry ?, or do they help you see the glass is not half empty but half full. Importantly, tonight, we’re focusing on the story of Hypatia and how it inspired Dr Bob Brown, what part of the story, did it make him solid in his conviction for the Franklin river and end up in jail for 19 days.
Galileo Galilei 15 February 1564[4] – 8 January 1642),[5]
Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations. He met with opposition from astronomers, the matter was investigated by the Roman Inquisition in 1615, which appeared to attack Pope Urban VIII and thus alienated him and the Jesuits, who had both supported Galileo up until this point.[9] He was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy", and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.[11][12]
Giordano Bruno (1548 – February 17, 1600),
philosopher, mathematician and astronomer. He was burned at the stake by civil authorities in 1600 after the Roman Inquisition found him guilty of heresy
St Mark the Evangelist [ 1st century AD – 25th April 68 AD ]
Author of the Gospel of Mark. He is one of the Seventy Disciples, and the founder of the Church of Alexandria- Egypt, When Mark returned to Alexandria, the pagans of the city resented his efforts to turn the Alexandrians away from the worship of their traditional gods.[citation needed] In AD 68 they placed a rope around his neck and dragged him through the streets until he was dead.[25]
Q2 [ The impact of Dams on rivers and how best to look after the Nile river and its precious water ]
There are 10 African nations that feeds the Nile river ;
1.Burundi,
2.Democratic Republic of the Congo,
3.Egypt [ Aswan High Dam
Generating 2,000 MegaWatts , in 1967 peak electricity output, it supplied 50% Egypt’s electricity demand
1998 electricity production is only meeting 15% of the 80 million national demand
It was in 1929 when then colonial rulers Britain signed an agreement with Egypt that would require other countries that share waters
of the River Nile to seek permission from Cairo before embarking on any large scale projects on the river.
The 1929 agreement which gave Egypt the right to object to any activity on the Nile without its consent was revised in 1959, this time
between Egypt 75% and Sudan 25%, giving the two countries absolute rights to use 100 per cent of the river's waters.
Egypt can’t have it’s legs crossed and hold on to it’s Nile Water for much longer !
The British began construction of the first Dam in 1898, opened on 10th Dec 1902
1946 British planned to build Aswan High Dam, 1952 Gamal Abdel Nasser – Free Officers Movement & the fall out of
Anglo-Egyptian treaty of 1936
1960 UNESCO Archaeologist rescued The Great Temple of Abu Simbel
1970 – 21st July The High Dam was completed
4.Ethiopia, [ The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam/Grand Millennium Dam
Generating 4,000 – 5,000 MegaWatts
Ethiopia rivers provides 85% of the water that reaches Egypt
Ethiopia is planning to build another 2 dams in the next 10 years similar to that of china
5.Kenya, ………………………………………………[ 24 new Dams
6.Rwanda,
7.Sudan,
8,South Sudan
9.Tanzania,
10.Uganda,

EGYPT ENERGY EFFICIENCY, RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
The current national energy supply mix in Egypt is:
• 95% from fossil fuel (petroleum products and natural gas)
• 5% from renewable resources (mainly hydro and wind, which is increasing gradually)
The Nile Basin Initiative is supported by contributions from the NBI countries themselves and through
the support of international financial institutions – such as the World Bank, the Global Environmental Facility and the African Development Bank – and other donors. In 2003 a World Bank-managed, multi-donor trust fund created to harmonize donor contributions. Donors that contributed through the Nile Basin Trust Fund until early 2008 include Canada, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Other donors to the NBI include Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the EU and various UN agencies such as UNDP and the FAO.[16]
Until early 2008 donors have contributed over US$130 million of the original pledge of US$150 million. US$14.4 million has been contributed by the governments of the Nile Basin
